Vijay Affidavit Row: Madras High Court Seeks Response Over Alleged ₹100 Crore Discrepancy
Vijay Affidavit Row: Actor-politician Vijay has come under judicial scrutiny after the Madras High Court issued notices over alleged inconsistencies in his election affidavits, just days before Tamil Nadu heads to the polls.

According to a report by Bar and Bench dated April 20, 2026, a Bench led by Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadikari and Justice Arul Murugan sought responses from Vijay, the Election Commission of India, and the Income Tax Department in connection with a plea raising concerns about discrepancies in his asset declarations.
The case arises from a petition filed by V. Vignesh, who alleged that the affidavits submitted by Vijay in two constituencies contain conflicting information. Vijay, who is contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections through his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has filed nominations from Perambur in Chennai and Trichy East.
As per the petition, Vijay declared movable assets worth ₹224 crore in his Trichy East affidavit, while the corresponding figure in his Perambur filing was stated as ₹105 crore. The plea claims that the difference, amounting to over ₹100 crore, was allegedly not disclosed or explained in the latter.
During the hearing, the court orally observed that such a variation could amount to an "irregularity," particularly given the scale of the discrepancy. However, the Bench stopped short of making any conclusive findings at this stage and has granted time for all respondents to submit their replies. The matter is expected to be taken up again after responses are filed.
Tamil Nadu Election Week: Vijay In Legal And Political Focus
The development comes at a crucial moment in the state's political calendar. Tamil Nadu is scheduled to vote on April 23, with counting set for May 4. Vijay's entry into electoral politics marks a significant shift from his film career, following the launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024. The party is contesting all 234 constituencies, positioning itself as an alternative to the state's established political formations.
Meanwhile, Vijay has also been in the news for reasons beyond politics. His film Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and widely seen as his final acting project, has faced delays related to certification issues. The situation escalated earlier this month when the film was leaked online, prompting the producers to initiate legal proceedings.
With both legal and political developments unfolding simultaneously, attention remains on how the affidavit issue progresses in court in the days leading up to the election.
