Vijay Swearing-In Ceremony Highlights: Political attention remained focused on Chennai on May 10 as C. Joseph Vijay officially took oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following days of government formation discussions after the 2026 Assembly election verdict. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Nehru Stadium in Chennai, where several ministers from the new government also took oath alongside the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader.
The developments marked a major moment in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK emerging as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly election. After multiple rounds of alliance talks and political negotiations, Vijay secured the backing required to form the government in the 234-member Assembly.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar had appointed Vijay as Chief Minister-designate after support letters from several parties were submitted at Lok Bhavan. Apart from the Indian National Congress, support also came from the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), helping TVK cross the majority mark in the Assembly.
The Governor has directed Vijay to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13. The upcoming confidence vote is expected to be one of the first major tests for the new coalition government.
TVK won 108 seats in the election, though the party's effective strength is expected to come down to 107 since Vijay secured victories from two constituencies and will have to vacate one seat later.
