Azhagar Malai – Review

By By: Settu Shankar

Azhagar Malai is a movie based on a simple village story. Though the story has an old commercial formula, it contains all the elements to entertain the viewers.

RK is a wayward youth in the village of Azhagar Malai near Madurai. He never cares about others and mostly spending his time in drinking accompanied by his uncle Vadivelu. Suddely, an incident changes his attitude and makes him campaign against drinking. The same day he meets Banu, a Chennai girl who comes to the village to attend the 'Mulaipaari' festival.

As expected, both fall in love in the very next frame and it leads to the marriage of the lovers. But Lal, the head of a rival group in the village who is against RK's brother Napolean wows that he would never allow the marriage to take place. The reason for their enemity is a different story. How RK overcomes the hurdle and marries Banu leads to the climax of the film.

RK plays the protagonist's role in this film after his hit movie Ellam Avan Seyal. Unlike earlier films, he tries to establish himself as a pucca commercial hero. He dances, tries his hand at humour and even romances the heroine. Comparing his previous movies, he carries himself well and improves himself in many areas on screen.

Vadivelu is the real hero of the movie. He rocks onscreen with his excellent typical one liners in the Madurai slang. His song with Sona is funny to watch. Napolean, Lal and Manivannan play their part exceedingly well. Ranjitha appears in a guest role.

Ilayaraja's music is the soul and pleasing aspect of the film. He also appears for a meaningful song for the first time. Watching Isaignani in a complete song as what he is in real life (6 mins) is a different experience. Karuga Mani is the song of the year and the soothing voices of Ilayaraja and Sadhana Sargam mesmerizes the listeners. Karthik Raja's camera work is pleasant.

Though the film has some minuses, we can appreciate RK and his team for giving a harmless, simple entertainer.

Verdict: Watchable
