our
review
to
know
what
exactly
does
this
movie,
directed
by
Mani
Nagaraj,
has
to
offer.
Pencil
Plot:
GV
Prakash's
enmity
with
a
fellow
student,
played
by
Shariq
Hassan,
is
well
documented
in
his
school
as
the
two,
after
several
petty
fights,
end
up
exchanging
full-fledged
blows.
To
GV
Prakash's
shock,
Shariq
Hassan
is
later
found
murdered
in
his
class
room.
Understandably,
Prakash
becomes
a
prime
suspect
in
the
case.
Rest
of
the
film
revolves
around
how
GV
Prakash,
with
the
help
of
his
friend,
played
by
Sri
Divya,
solves
the
mystery
behind
the
murder.
Performances:
Solid
performances
are
provided
by
the
film's
supporting
cast
that
includes
actors
like
VTV
Ganesh,
Urvashi
and
TP
Gajendran.
While
GV
Prakash's
performance
looks
a
tad
amateurish,
Sri
Divya
fails
to
portray
her
character
in
a
convincing
manner.
However,
her
charm
makes
up
for
it.
Shariq
Hassan
looks
like
a
good
find.
It
should
be
interesting
to
see
if
the
newcomer
bags
any
other
project
in
the
near
future.
Technicalities:
Pencil
performs
better
in
the
second
half
with
adequate
thrill
moments
and
some
fantastically
written
comedy
sequences.
The
first
half
though
is
not
up
to
the
mark.
Gopi
Amarnath's
cinematography
stands
out
till
the
very
end,
for
it
is
not
easy
to
shoot
the
entire
movie
in
the
same
location
and
then
make
it
look
not
so
tedious.
Editor
Anthony
has
done
a
neat
job
in
keeping
the
audiences
hooked
in
many
scenes.
GV
Prakash's
background
score
is
apt
and
solid.
Overall
View:
Overall,
Pencil
could've
been
a
better
thriller
had
the
director
incorporated
few
more
thrills
and
spills.
Having
said
that,
the
movie
has
its
moments,
which
makes
it
a
decent
thriller.
