Soorarai
Pottru
Plot
Nedumaaran
Rajangam
aka
Maara
(Suriya)
ex-air
force
officer
from
a
village
in
Madurai,
dreams
of
starting
an
airline
company
and
make
the
commoners
fly.
He
falls
in
love
with
Sundari
aka
Bommi
(Aparna
Balamurali),
a
baker,
and
marries
her.
Maara
meets
his
idol
Paresh
Goswami
(Paresh
Rawal),
the
head
of
one
of
the
biggest
airline
companies
in
the
country,
and
puts
forward
his
ideas,
only
to
get
rejected.
How
Maara
achieves
his
dreams
with
the
support
of
his
mother
Pechi
(Urvashi),
Bommi,
and
friends,
forms
the
plot
of
Soorarai
Pottru.
Script
&
Direction
Sudha
Kongara
has
directed
Soorarai
Pottru,
as
well
as
written
the
project
along
with
Shalini
Ushadevi,
Aalif
Surti,
Ganesha,
and
Vijaya
Kumar.
The
backbone
of
the
movie
is
the
well-written
screenplay,
that
has
brought
together
the
emotional
highs
and
lows
in
protagonist
Maara's
journey
with
absolute
conviction.
Soorarai
Pottru
does
not
limit
itself
to
a
one-man
show,
but
most
of
the
characters
get
the
space
to
create
a
mark.
Director
Kongara
deserves
special
applause
for
the
brilliant
casting
of
the
movie.
The
movie
takes
digs
at
society's
patriarchal
ways
through
the
character
Bommi,
which
is
commendable.
Also,
this
film
has
one
of
the
best
romantic
tracks
(Maara
and
Bommi's
love
story)
of
Tamil
cinema
in
recent
times.
Similarly,
there
are
a
handful
of
endearing
scenes
featuring
Maara's
parents
and
Bommi's
uncle
(played
by
Poo
Ram,
Urvashi,
and
Karunas,
respectively).
But
yes,
Soorarai
Pottru
has
its
own
minor
flaws
as
well.
The
antagonist
(Paresh
Rawal's
character)
is
shown
as
a
classist,
cleanliness-freak
industrialist
in
the
beginning,
but
the
growth
ends
there.
After
a
certain
point,
his
character
is
reduced
into
a
strictly
one-dimensional
Tamil
cinema
villain,
whom
we
have
seen
in
several
films
before.
Similarly,
certain
scenes
end
up
being
repetitive
and
sometimes
melodramatic.
Performances
Suriya
once
again
reminds
us
why
he
has
been
considered
as
one
of
the
finest
actors
of
contemporary
Tamil
cinema,
with
his
terrific
performance.
That
actor
has
brought
the
slightest
emotions
of
Maara
into
life
with
absolute
brilliance,
with
his
amazing
acting
skills
and
spectacular
voice
modulation.
Aparna
Balamurali
is
simply
amazing
as
the
headstrong,
ambitious
girl
who
becomes
the
support
system
of
her
husband,
but
still
has
an
identity
of
her
own.
It
is
so
refreshing
to
see
a
Tamil-speaking
heroine
in
a
film
after
so
long.
The
excellent
supporting
cast,
including
antagonist
Paresh
Rawal,
Urvashi,
Karunas,
Poo
Ram,
Vivekh
Prasanna,
Krishna
Kumar,
Mohan
Babu,
and
others
are
perfect
in
their
respective
roles.
Technical
Aspects
Niketh
Bommireddy,
the
director
of
photography,
has
done
a
great
job
with
the
visuals
of
Soorarai
Pottru,
which
is
one
of
the
most
well-shot
Tamil
films
in
recent
times.
Sathish
Suriya's
editing
has
made
the
Suriya-starrer
a
well-paced,
engaging
experience.
The
art
and
sound
departments
also
deserve
applause
for
the
brilliant
jobs
they
have
done.
The
music
composed
by
the
talented
GV
Prakash
Kumar
is
the
heart
and
soul
of
Soorarai
Pottru.
The
brilliant
soundtrack
and
excellent
background
score
have
completely
elevated
the
overall
experience.
Pros:
Script
&
making
Performances
Music
Visuals
Cons:
One-dimensional
antagonist
Repetitive
scenes
Verdict
This
Suriya-starrer
is
a
well-made
film
that
has
some
brilliant
performances,
great
visuals,
and
excellent
music.
It
is
undoubtedly
a
perfect
watch
for
this
festival
season.
Soorarai
Pottru
is
born
to
fly
high!
