Plot

Singaravelan aka Singam (Vijay Sethupathi) was born during a political rally and believes that he is destined to be a politician. He tries his best to win the trust of his idol Rayappan (R Parthiban), a powerful politician. In the process, he sidelines Mangalam (Bhagavathi Perumal), who is a close aid of Rayappan. This provokes Mangalam who physically assaults Singam, leading him to have a split-personality disorder.

However, Singam's eventual acts strain his relationships with his younger sister Manimekalai (Manjima Mohan), and lady love Kamatchi (Raashi Khanna). What happens next forms the crux of Tughlaq Durbar.

Script & Direction

Delhi Prasad Deenadayalan makes an excellent directorial debut with Tughlaq Durbar, which is an enjoyable political comedy with a touch of fantasy. The film has an interesting storyline, and the almost engaging narrative makes it a solid watch. The internal battles of Singam are well-written and executed. The brilliant usage of satire in the narrative deserves special mention. The lead character, played by Vijay Sethupathi is well-written and flushed out.

However, Tughlaq Durbar is not a flawless film. Most of the characters are monotonous and had zero character development despite having a scope. Also, the predictability factor hits the narrative towards its second half. Even though it has a highly promising storyline that had the potential to emerge as an extraordinary movie experience, Tughlaq Durbar ends up as a simple, fun entertainer.

Performances

Vijay Sethupathi has played Singam to near perfection, and scores with his extraordinary comic timing. The National award-winner steals the show especially in the scenes that bring out the negative shades of his character. R Parthiban is brilliant as Rayappan, despite his character being a mere copy of some of his previous roles. The excellent camaraderie between Sethupathi and Parthiban is one of the biggest highlights of Tughlaq Durbar.

Raashi Khanna delivers a decent performance as Kamatchi in her minimal role. Manjima Mohan also shines in her role despite having limited screen time. Karunakaran, who appears as Singam's best friend, has played his part to near perfection. Sathyaraj excels in his interesting cameo appearance. The rest of the cast are good in their respective roles.

Technical Aspects

Manoj Paramahamsa and Mahendiran Jayaraju's cinematography is unarguably the biggest strength of Tughlaq Durbar (especially, the scene in which Singam's split-personality comes into existence is shot spectacularly). R Govindaraj scores with the crisp editing.

Govind Vasantha, the talented musician has done a great job with the background score of Tughlaq Durbar, which sets up the perfect mood for the narrative. The songs are also impressive.

Verdict

Tughlaq Durbar is an absolute fun ride, that narrates an interesting story in the backdrop of politics with a good dose of humour. Despite its minor flaws, this Vijay Sethupathi starrer emerges as a solid entertainer.
