Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is now a Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development in the government of Tamil Nadu, has released an official statement about his retirement from films. He won the elections from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party founded by his grandfather. His father, MK Stalin is the Chief Minister.

The movie is written and directed by Mu Maran. The movie is produced by VN Ranjith Kumar under the Lipi Cine Crafts banner. The film's cinematography was handled by Jalandhar Vasan and editing was done by San Lokesh. Siddhu Kumar composed the film's entire music and background score. Red Giant Movies distributed Kannai Nambathey.

The film's title is inspired by a song in the film titled 'Ninaithadhai Mudippavan,' released in the year 1975. Director Mu Maran said that the film's genre is similar to his directorial debut,' Iravukku Aayiram Kangal.' The film faced several production delays after the principal photography commenced on February 11, 2019.
