Maniesh Paul: ‘Going Mute For Black Briefcase Was Like Maun Vrat For Me’! Exclusive Interview
Maniesh Paul, in an exclusive interview with Filmibeat, spoke about his upcoming short film Black Briefcase and revealed that his favourite judge on Indian Idol 10 is Anu Malik.
The man of the moment, Maniesh Paul shifts gear with his upcoming short film 'Black Briefcase'. What is even more interesting about the film is that he has absolutely no dialogues. For a man who is known for his witty words and humour, it is refreshing to see him in a new avatar, which is dark and intense. In an exclusive interview with Filmibeat, Maniesh talks about what went behind the new role he'll be playing in Black Briefcase. He also opens up about little-known details from his life such as the hangout spot where he and his then girlfriend met up in Delhi, what he did with his first salary and also reveals who's his favourite judge on the Indian Idol 10 show!
1. You are playing a dark role in Black Briefcase. You must havedonned a different personality for the role. How did portraying intense emotions for the character affect you as a person?
Honestly, I snapped out fast. My switch on and off is really amazing (touch wood)! I had to prepare for the character, as I am never quite, neither negative nor a sharp guy. But, after all the hard work, thankfully the product has come out nice. I even showed it to a couple of friends who really liked it!
2. We read you have very few or no dialogues in the movie, how did you prepare for the role?

have
any
lines
in
the
film
and
had
to
stay
really
quiet.
I
stayed
away
from
everybody
and
didn't
talk
to
anybody
for
so
many
days.
I
would
make
sure
even
on
the
sets,
I
wasn't
at
all
my
chirpy
self.
I
was
really
quiet
and
cut
off
from
everybody.

You're
considered
to
be
one
of
the
most
witty
and
talented
hosts.
We
have
seen
you
constantly
engaging
with
everyone
through
your
interesting
and
entertaining
speech.
So,
how
was
it
not
talking
for
hours
during
the
shoot?
Did
it
change
your
perception
about
communication?
It was very difficult for me. Mein toh 2 minute chup nahi rehta. It was like a maun vrat (vow of silence) for me. I was focusing on my role and would only think about my scenes. I wouldn't look around and only look at the ground all the time.
4. What is your first memory of the showbiz world?
I remember I used to be in Delhi and used to watch Filmfare night together with the family, which was the highlight.
5. You are a true Delhi boy. Since you've spent early and most of your life over there, name one place that was your favourite hangout spot.
I used to go to Malviya Nagar main market, which is where I used to stay. Or, with my then girlfriend and now wife, I would go to Dilli Heart. That was the place I would hang around.
6. What did you do with your first ever salary?
In a very filmy manner, I gave it to my mother. The pay was not even more, it was only Rs 350. So I gave it to my mother and told her to keep it. She was very happy, she was thrilled.
7. An Indian and non-Indian comedian you look up to?
Non-Indian comedian, I would look up to, would be Jim Carrey. He is amazing! And I think in Indian comedy, nobody can beat Mahmood saab and Johnny Lever sir.
8.What do you like better? Hosting or acting?
I can't choose one. I am very greedy (laughs). I like to work in both.
9. Who is your favourite judge and contestant on Indian Idol 10?
My favourite judge is Malik sir. The rest two are my friends. Anu Malik ji is also my friend, but since he is senior, I would say he's my favourite judge. I can't choose one favourite contestant. Honestly, they are all very good. Har bhar har bhanda jo naya gaana lik kar aatha hai, who pichley baar se better gaatha hai. So, it's really difficult to choose a favourite one among them.
