Sumbul Touqeer On Struggle Due To Dark Complexion, Reveals People Said, ‘Kisko Cast Kar Liya, Kaali Hai’

Sumbul Touqeer Khan, who started her acting career as a child artist in 2011 with Chandragupta Maurya, has come a long way in her career. While she established herself as a popular TV star after playing the titular role in the hit Star Plus show Imlie, Colors TV's Bigg Boss 16 made her a household name.

However, did you know that Sumbul struggled a lot even as a child actor as people wanted only fair-skinned artists? Yes, you read that right!

In a recent interview, Sumbul Touqeer Khan revealed how she faced rejections due to her 'dark complexion' and how Imlie finally changed the perception of others towards her. Talking about her struggles while talking to ETimes, the actress stated that when she arrived in Mumbai, she was primarily focused on becoming a dancer rather than an actress. However, her aspirations shifted after a while. The early days were tough, as she began her journey as a child actor.

Unfortunately, the casting directors only seemed to be interested in fair-skinned actors, which was demoralizing and disheartening for Sumbul. The actress found it particularly offensive since she doesn't believe that one's skin color should be a factor in their profession. Over time, she started to internalize the belief that dark-skinned actors could not be lead heroines, as every actress she saw was fair-skinned. However, her perspective shifted when she landed the role of Imlie.

Sumbul further said, "When I bagged Imlie also things didn't change instantly. People would call up and say "Arre kaisi ladki ko cast kar liya, kaali hai". I had felt very bad that day and I had cried a lot but after the telecast things started to change. Our opening TRP numbers were 2.2 and it the number just went up from there it never came down till the time I was part of it. People forgot how I looked, they just noticed my work. The people who disliked me also started praising me. I feel this is all based on convenience."

Well, Sumbul totally deserves all the success and love coming her way. Also, she's an inspiration for many newcomers who aspires to make a name for themselves in showbiz.
