The five-day festivities which begin today with Dhanteras will end with Bhai Dooj on November 15, following Diwali a day earlier. Today, on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, people purchase new things as a mark of bringing good luck and prosperity. While discussing the significance of the day, actress Niju Machhan, revealed what she is planning to buy on this day.

Niju, who is currently seen playing the character of Gurpreet in the Zee TV show Kundali Bhagya, says,"On this auspicious day, people buy gold, silver and other utensils because it is believed that purchasing new things on this day brings good luck to the devotees. Every year on Dhanteras, I make sure to clean my house and go shopping. This year, too, I am going to buy a gold and diamond ring for myself and a gold bracelet for my little daughter. My husband also believes that 'Ghar ki Lakshmi ko khush rakhna jaroori hai', so it will be a shopping day for me and my daughter (laughs)."

Niju further adds, "Apart from this, we light lamps and diyas and I decorate the entrance of our home with rangoli on this day. A special puja is performed in the evening and whatever purchase is made is kept in the temple. Also, I prepare some traditional sweets as a bhog for Goddess Lakshmi and Dhanvantari. We wrap up the day with good food and greet our loved ones."

On the professional front, Niju is known for her role in the popular Sony SAB sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, which stars Dilip Joshi in a lead role. She has impressed the audience with her roles in several Doordarshan shows like Mumtaaz Mahel, Munidhaar, Kahani Meri Maati Ki, Saahiba Mirz, Tum bin jiya jaye na.
