In this episode, Rannvijay Singha takes his audience on an enthralling journey through Gujarat, unravelling the mysteries of ancient shipbuilding and maritime trade. Airing on Discovery Channel and discovery+ at 9pm, the episode blends history, archaeology, and exploration to shed light on a fascinating, lesser-known facet of India's sea trade.
The adventure begins at Mandvi Port, where Rannvijay witnesses traditional wooden shipbuilding techniques still practiced today. These handmade ships echo the craftsmanship of ancient times, offering a glimpse into the skills that have been passed down through generations.
Speaking about the journey, Rannvijay Singha shared, "Exploring the Harappan maritime history has been a revelatory experience. It's incredible how advanced the technology and science behind building ships and settlements were at the time. Walking through ports, uncovering evidence of ancient ships, and learning about the trade networks that linked us to the world centuries ago has deepened my appreciation for our heritage."
Rannvijay's journey then continues along the "Road to Heaven" to Dholavira, a pivotal maritime post of the Harappan civilization. Here, he uncovers evidence of Harappan maritime trade in the form of strategically placed rocks and archaeological remains. From Dholavira the quest finds itself in Lothal another important docking centre for the Harrapans and then finally ends in the quaint island of Divar situated on the Mandovi river in Goa.
The episode ties together archaeological findings and rich expert insights, but would they be enough to paint a vivid picture of the Harappan civilization's maritime achievements?
