Kaun Banega Crorepati: 4 Life Lessons From Kumar Mangalam Birla's Heart-To-Heart With Amitabh Bachchan On KBC
In a rare and insightful television appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, played for Jaipur Foot, a charitable organisation that has provided artificial limbs to over 2.5 million people. During the episode, he shared profound life and business lessons during his conversation with megastar Amitabh Bachchan, The dialogue bridged the worlds of corporate excellence and human values, offering four key takeaways for the next generation.

1. Education and Hard Work: The 'CA' Mandate
Mr Birla revealed a pivotal moment regarding his education; after graduation, he wished to pursue an MBA, but his father, Mr Aditya Birla, insisted he first qualify as a Chartered Accountant (CA). His father gave him a clear ultimatum: if he did not become a CA, there would be no place for him to work in the office. Even when Mr Birla sought intervention from his grandfather, Mr B.K. Birla, he was told he must complete the qualification, teaching him that there are no shortcuts to professional credibility.
2. Valuing the Small Things: The Signature of History
The conversation highlighted the importance of cherishing relationships and small memories. Mr Bachchan fondly recalled a visit to the Birla residence in Kolkata where Mr B.K. Birla presented a guest book featuring the signature of Amitabh's father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, from the 1950s. In a touching gesture of respect for legacy, Mr B.K. Birla asked Amitabh to sign right next to his father's signature, showing how the family prioritises sentimental value over material wealth.
3. Resilience in Adversity: The Power of Consistency
Taking over the business empire at the young age of 28 following his father's untimely demise, Mr Birla admitted to feeling immense fear and pressure. He leaned on his education and the resilience taught by his family, and his faith in Divine. He shared a Sanskrit shloka-shanaiah pantha shanaiah kantha-emphasising that any substantial achievement requires time and consistent effort. His journey proves that consistency is the bedrock of enduring success.
4. The Virtue of Simplicity: The Textile Baron's Cupboard
Perhaps the most striking lesson was on simplicity. Mr Birla recounted that after his grandfather, Mr B.K. Birla, passed away, he opened his cupboard to find only 23 kurtas, two ties, three suits, and a single watch. Despite being a "textile baron" who controlled vast textile interests, his grandfather lived with very few personal belongings, often resisting the purchase of new clothes to avoid unnecessary expenditure on himself. This legacy of simple living and high thinking remains a guiding light for the family.
Family Moments and Personal Anecdotes
The episode offered rare glimpses into the Birla family's personal dynamics. Mr Birla's youngest daughter Advaitesha revealed that despite his demanding schedule, her father called her five times a day when she was studying abroad, showing his protective nature. They bond over painting and sometimes paint together. His son shared that whether at home or in office, Mr Birla checks on him 3-4 times daily and messages every evening at 7pm asking if he's eaten properly.
His wife Neerja jokingly complained about his tendency not to listen and having to repeat things multiple times - a relatable domestic moment that drew laughter from the audience.
At his daughter's request, Mr Birla sang a few lines from a classic song, showcasing an artistic side rarely seen in public. Ananya also shared that she and her father bond over music.
Other Notable Moments
Mr Birla shared that he prepared intensely for a few days before the appearance, admitting he was nervous about making mistakes in front of Amitabh Bachchan, whom he described as a "father figure."
