Laughter Chefs 2 Fame Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi: Men Are Under The Pressure Of Being 'Macho'

Men's Mental Health Awareness Month is observed this month, and celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi says that this is an essential time to think about the emotional and mental pressures that men in our country are under. He says that men are always expected to be strong, even when they are going through emotionally turbulent times.
"I think Mental Health Awareness Month, which is observed in June, is a very important topic and should be discussed more, especially among men. In India, men are often told to act tough and not show emotions. They believe they have to be the 'macho man', 'stay quiet, and keep everything inside'. They don't express their feelings openly, not even with their own families. This makes things even harder for them. As men grow older, they take on more responsibilities like getting married, having children, and running a family. On top of that, there's pressure from the corporate world, the need to stay competitive, and always trying to 'be there' for everyone. All of this becomes a heavy burden," he says.
Taking a break for yourself is essential, he says. "I feel it is very important for men to take breaks, do meditation, maybe try Vipassana, and most importantly, have friends they can talk to openly. But the first and most important step is sharing with your own family. Talk to your wife, share your thoughts, and express your feelings whether something feels right or wrong. I believe that everything starts at home. If you start opening up at home, it really helps reduce mental stress."
He adds, "Also, I feel men should be part of morning activities like yoga groups, sports, or just walking with friends. It's good to meet people, laugh together, and get some exercise. Having a circle of family friends also helps, like going out to watch movies or dining out together. These small things make life easier and lighter. Hobbies are also very helpful. If a man has a hobby like playing music, reading, watching films, cycling, or anything creative or physical - it really helps him relax and deal with stress better. Going on vacations with family also makes a big difference."
