Television actor Arjun Bijlani cut short a New Year vacation in Dubai after father-in-law Rakesh Chandra Swami died in hospital on Thursday morning. Swami, 73, had been in the ICU on a ventilator since Monday, and is survived by son Nishank and daughter Neha. Arjun and spouse Neha Swami flew back to Mumbai on Tuesday as soon as the family informed them about the medical emergency. The couple has remained at Bellevue Hospital since returning, staying with relatives as they manage the formalities and mourn the loss.

Arjun Bijlani and family cope with sudden loss
A relative explains the shock within the family, saying, 'He was fit and fine, set to have dinner when suddenly he suffered a stroke and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was on a ventilator. The entire family is in shock, as Neha and Arjun had met the family before flying off. It was a sudden shock, and we are all still grappling with the situation."
Arjun married Neha Swami in May 2013 and shared a close bond with Swami. A family member says, 'Yes, as Arjun's father passed away quite early, he has been very close to him, he was like a father figure to him. Of course, for Neha, he was her closest, as any father is to his daughter."
Emotional memories of Arjun Bijlani and Neha’s father
Neha had earlier expressed her affection publicly in a Father's Day message posted with a photograph. She wrote: "Happy Father's Day to my daddy. I've always admired the way you loved, led, and protected our family. I always hoped Arjun would learn from you — your strength, your patience, and the way you make fatherhood look like a blessing.."
Her tribute continued, highlighting how Swami’s role shaped her life and choices. Neha added, "A father's love is the foundation of a family, and yours has shaped who I am and what I seek in the people I love." Thank you for being the example every father should strive to be. Love u daddy." The family is now gathering in Mumbai to perform final rites and support each other.
