Manish Wadhwa Of Sony SAB s Hastinapur Ke Veer

In this conversation, Manish Wadhwa talks about stepping into the iconic role of Bhishma Pitamah, his approach to portraying the character, his bond with the young cast members and the values he hopes audiences take away from Hastinapur Ke Veer.

1. Bhishma Pitamah is one of the most iconic characters from the Mahabharata. What was your first thought when you were offered this role?

The role of Bhishma Pitamah itself was the biggest reason for me to say yes. God is very kind to have given me the chance to step into Bhishma's shoes. It's not every day that an actor gets the opportunity to portray such an iconic and respected character. If a character excites me, challenges me, and allows me to grow as an actor, I am immediately drawn to it. Bhishma Pitamah is one such character and it is truly an honour to bring him to life on screen.

2. Every actor brings something unique to a well-known character. What has been your approach to portraying Bhishma Pitamah?

My approach has been to portray Bhishma Pitamah based on everything I have read, heard and learned about him over the years. He is a character defined by wisdom, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his principles and I have tried to reflect those qualities with sincerity and authenticity. At the same time, I believe every portrayal should have its own identity because each actor connects with a character differently. My effort is to present Bhishma Pitamah in a way that is truthful to his legacy while bringing my own perspective and experience to the role.

3. Which of Bhishma Pitamah's qualities do you connect with the most personally?

Among Bhishma Pitamah's many admirable qualities, I connect most deeply with his discipline, wisdom and unwavering sense of duty. These virtues are what make him such a timeless and inspiring figure. As an actor, I believe discipline is the foundation of our craft, while wisdom and responsibility help us navigate both our professional and personal lives. I do my job with complete honesty and understand the importance of the job and we should learn that from Bhishma. In many ways, I strive to embody these values in my own journey and I feel they are essential qualities for every artist to cultivate.

4. Since Hastinapur Ke Veer focuses on the younger years of the Pandavas and Kauravas, what new side of Bhishma do viewers get to see in the show?

Bhishma Pitamah is a deeply layered character and the show offers audiences a chance to see a more nurturing and compassionate side of him. The show also highlights the immense love and care he has for both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He remains impartial and treats every child equally, constantly guiding them with wisdom and concern. Viewers will witness not just the revered guardian of Hastinapur, but also a protective mentor and grandfather figure whose affection and guidance shape the next generation. He is a guide not just to the kids but also to the parents.

5. Mythological dramas often require a certain presence and body language. How did you work on these aspects for Bhishma?

Every character, whether historical, mythological or contemporary, requires a distinct physicality and presence. For Bhishma Pitamah, it was important to understand not just his personality but also how he would carry himself, how he walks, sits, speaks, and reacts in different situations. Alongside studying the character, I focused on physical preparation through regular workouts, yoga, and training to bring the required strength and grace to the role. All these elements come together to create the aura, dignity and commanding presence that audiences associate with Bhishma Pitamah.

6. You share a special bond with the young actors on set. What has it been like working with such a large cast?

Working with the young cast has been a truly wonderful experience. Whether they are portraying the Pandavas or the Kauravas, each child is incredibly talented, sincere and full of enthusiasm. They bring a wonderful energy to the set, and I genuinely enjoy spending time with them. What I appreciate most is their honesty and spontaneity as performers. Off-screen, many of them lovingly call me Pitamah or Dadu, which makes our bond even more special. These kids also gave me a wonderful surprise on Father's Day. They come and sit on my lap to play with me. We share a lot of laughter, conversations and memorable moments between scenes, creating a warm and positive atmosphere on set.

7. As an experienced actor, do you find yourself guiding the younger cast members at times? What kind of advice do you usually give them?

Whenever I get the opportunity, I do share a few lessons from my own experience. I also remind them to enjoy their childhood, have fun off-screen and then give their complete focus and dedication when it's time to perform. One thing I always try to make them understand is not to get carried away by either positive or negative comments. If you focus too much on praise, it can give you an unnecessary attitude, and if you focus too much on criticism, it can demotivate you.

I also tell them that while they should fully immerse themselves in their characters on screen, they should never lose their own identity. When I face the camera, I become Bhishma Pitamah, but once the shot is over, I return to being Manish Wadhwa. I encourage the children to approach acting the same way, learn from the positive qualities of your character, but don't carry the role with you all the time.

8. What do you hope today's audience, especially the parents, take away from your character and the show?

I believe Hastinapur Ke Veer is more than just a mythological drama; it reflects values and life lessons that remain relevant even today. For parents, Hastinapur Ke Veer is a powerful reminder that the greatest gift they can give their children is strong values and unwavering character. Children are like wet clay, you can mold them into any shape, and it is the parents' responsibility to give them the right shape. In the show, my character is conveying, 'as you sow, so shall you reap'. The story doesn't preach, it encourages reflection and gives us an opportunity to think about ourselves and our children.
