The year 2006 signified a change in attitude of the Telugu movie-goers. "Being a superstar alone isn't enough to make the films run" was the verdict this year. Story and screenplay attained prominence. Films slowly returned to being the director's brainchild.
Chiranjeevi came up with the wonderful heart-warming hit, Stalin. NBK did come up with some films but none managed to stay in the audience's memories. Nagarjuna came up with Shri Ramadasu, a blockbuster, followed by Boss. Nayantara looked fabulous in the latter.
Venkatesh was going through career troubles after the remake of Khaaka Khaaka collapsed in Telugu. His career was rescued by Lakshmi. The film also brought Nayantara in Telugu.
Pawan Kalyan earns the dubious distinction of having starred in the most hyped film of the year, Bangaram. Of course, it was not his fault that the film turned out to be such an utter flop. The story was haphazard, the screenplay failed to make sense, and in spite of the fact that there were three heroines, he didn't have any romantic interest in the film! His Annawaram, which was released about a day ago, will help him recover.
NTR continued to experiment with different roles. Ashok got mixed verdict from the audience. But everybody fell in love with Rakhi. The film's emotional appeal was hard to resist. But NTR better lose weight and get back in shape!!!
The year belongs to three people - Mahesh Babu, Sunil and Siddharth
Mahesh Babu continued to have a roller-coaster year. His Pokiri turned out to be the biggest hit of the year, surpassing even Stalin. But he followed it up with the disastrous Sainikudu. The film flopped. But, Pokiri remains untouched.
Siddharth is one hero who has studied his fan-base's attitude and his image. He specializes in making films that suit his image. That's the secret behind the average success of Chukkalo Chandrudu and the phenomenal performance of Bommarillu. The actor was plagued throughout the year by rumors of failing marriage.
The surprise of the year was Sunil. Until now, everybody thought that he was only good at doing comedy. But he showed that he could dance very gracefully too. Coincidentally, this was also the year when Tamil comedian Vadivelu made his debut as a hero. Both the films turned out to be blockbuster hits at the box office.
Next year- Frankly, it remains a big mystery.
