Akkineni Nageswara Rao Dies Of Cancer; Tollywood Stars Express Shock Over ANR's Death

Legendary Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who was recently admitted to hospital, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday (January 22, 2014). At 2.10 am today, the 90-year-old actor, who is fondly known as ANR, was rushed to the Care Hospital for treatment, when his condition got worsened. But he died at the hospital at 2.45 am. He was 91. He is survived by three daughters and two sons.

On January 7, it was rumoured that Akkineni Nageswara Rao's health condition was deteriorating, but his grandson Sumanth had slammed the reports stating that he was healthy. The budding actor tweeted, "A rumour seems to be floating around that my grandfather is critical. It's not true! ANR is doing alright! Thanks for your concern."

In a recent public event, Akkineni Nageswara Rao himself had said that he had suffered a heart problem and in 1988, he had a heart attack for which had underwent an operation for the same. In October 2013, he was diagnosed with cancer after he was admitted to hospital following stomach pain. Recently, he had undergone surgery for intestinal cancer and was said to be fast recovering from it.

Talking about the cancer, Akkineni Nageswara Rao had said, "I am not shocked or scared at the cancer diagnosis now. I have a strong will and I have the best wishes of the people."

The 90-year-old actor, who made his acting debut with Telugu film Sitarama Jananam in 1944, had starred in 250 films. Batasari, Devadasu and Prem Nagar are some of his best films. He was currently shooting for Telugu family drama Manam with son Akkineni Nagarjuna and grandson Akkineni Naga Chaitanya. His sudden death has shocked Tollywood.
