The movie is panned from the period of 3100 BC to 2898 AD making it a mythological science fiction genre. Bhairava, a resident of a post-apocalyptic city Kashi, wants to earn enough units to move to The Complex, a city where there is everything and only for the elite. On the other hand, there is also a city called Shambala, which is a refugee camp for the downtrodden. Meanwhile, Aswattama, who vows to protect the child of Sumathi aka SUM 80, faces Bhairava, who is on a mission to capture SUM 80 to go to the Complex.

Not only is Prabhas' Kalki 2898 AD the first Indian film to earn a mammoth 4 Million USD in advance bookings ahead of the theatrical release already but also is the first film to have sold over one lakh (100,000) tickets for its premiere, which is greater than Ram Charan-Jr NTR's RRR movie. It is an all-time record and the Cinemark theatre chain has grossed over 1.3 Million USD through pre-sales, which is also the first for the popular theatre group.

On the first day of its release, Jr NTR-Ram Charan's film made by SS Rajamouli, RRR, had earned a worldwide gross of Rs 135 Crore. It is to be seen if Prabhas' Kalki 2898 AD will surpass the collection and set a new record.
