Ram Gopal Varma Faces Arrest Over Remarks On CM Naidu

Ram Gopal Varma Faces Arrest Over Remarks On CM Naidu: On November 25, a team of Andhra Pradesh Police visited the residence of filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills after he failed to appear for questioning in connection with a case involving derogatory comments made on social media about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his family members. According to reports, the Ongole Rural Police arrived at Ram Gopal Varma's home, only to find that the filmmaker was not present, as he had reportedly traveled to Coimbatore.

Ram Gopal Varma was supposed to appear for questioning at the Ongole Rural Police Station tOday. However, since he failed to do so, the police are now preparing for his arrest.

Reports indicate that staff at Ram Gopal Varma's residence informed the police that he was not in Hyderabad and was traveling for film-related work. Ram Gopal Varma's lawyer reportedly stated that they are willing to cooperate with the investigation and have requested a few more days. The lawyer also mentioned that, due to film commitments, Ram Gopal Varma had sought permission to appear virtually for questioning.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Under Fire Amid Legal Trouble

Ram Gopal Varma, popularly known as RGV, had earlier requested four additional days to appear before the police. The case stems from allegations made by local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) mandal secretary Ramalingam, who filed a complaint claiming that the filmmaker posted defamatory remarks about CM Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, Jana Sena president and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, and other family members during promotional activities for his film Vyuham ahead of the general elections in late 2023.

The police registered a case on November 11. The complaint accuses RGV of tarnishing the reputation of these political figures through his social media posts, which were deemed objectionable.

After serving Ram Gopal Varma with a notice on November 13 to appear before the investigating officer, the filmmaker approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, seeking interim relief from the requirement. However, the court declined the request and advised RGV to apply for bail if he feared arrest. He was later sent another notice to appear for questioning on November 25. When he failed to comply, police teams were dispatched to his residence to execute the arrest.

As RGV failed to appear for questioning a second time, the police have intensified efforts to detain him. Two police teams have reportedly been sent to Coimbatore and Mumbai. At the same time, RGV's social media accounts reportedly indicated he was in Hyderabad, prompting the police to turn their focus to two farmhouses in Shamshabad and Shadnagar. Efforts are currently underway to take RGV into custody by evening.
