Retro Telugu Opening Day Box Office Collection: Suriya's hyped romantic action drama by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro, was released to heavy expectations from fans and movie buffs on May 1 worldwide. The actor, who is determined to make a comeback to his success streak following the brutal impact of 'Kanguva,' promoted Retro in all ways he could, leading to a stellar opening day. Retro was also released in multiple languages and the Telugu version enjoyed a decent number of screens.

The movie Retro opened to tough competition from Nani's HIT 3 and the advance bookings were lesser than HIT 3 before the end of its release day. However, Suriya's stardom couldn't match that of Nani's and the former's movie made more in India. After hitting the screens, Retro movie earned mixed reviews just like Nani's HIT 3. There is a section of audiences who didn't like the movie for several reasons. However, while Suriya walked away with laurels and critical applause for his performance, Karthik Subbaraj has been facing the brunt for his outdated story, sloppy narration, and his own style of unique filmmaking which didn't gel well with the story.

The movie, which opened to stiff competition nationally and internationally, managed to overcome the advance bookings superiority of Nani's HIT 3 and made Rs 19.33 Crore from day 1 in India from all languages. In Telugu alone, Suriya's Retro made Rs 1.95 Crore on the release day. With HIT 3 and Retro making waves at the box office, both movies are expected to churn out good footfalls and revenue in the opening weekend.

Suriya played Paarivel Kannan, who is the adopted son of Tilak (Joju George), a notorious smuggler. Paarivel falls deeply in love with Rukmini (Pooja Hegde) and wants to leave his past behind.
