Who Is Kalpana Raghavendar?

Kalpana Raghavendar is a well-known Indian playback singer, songwriter, and actor. She gained widespread recognition as the winner of Idea Star Singer Malayalam and later participated in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 1. Her journey in music began at the young age of five, and over the years, she has built an extensive career, having recorded over 1,500 songs and performed in approximately 3,000 stage shows both in India and internationally.

Coming from a musically inclined family, Kalpana was introduced to the world of music at an early age. Her father, T. S. Raghavendra, was a renowned playback singer, composer, and actor, while her mother, Sulochana, is also a singer. Her younger sister, Shekinah Shawn (born Prasanna Raghavendar), has made a name for herself as an opera singer. Kalpana trained in Carnatic music under the guidance of Madurai T. Srinivasan and holds a master's degree in computer applications.

Her playback singing career took off when she was just six years old, lending her voice to a song composed by Saluri Vasurao. She also appeared as a child artist in the Kamal Haasan-starrer Punnagai Mannan. However, her breakthrough as a full-fledged playback singer came in 1999 with the Telugu song Mangalagouriki from Manoharam, composed by Mani Sharma. Over the years, she has collaborated with legendary musicians like Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, M. S. Viswanathan, and K. V. Mahadevan. She has also shared the stage with iconic singers such as S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra.

While she has made significant contributions to playback singing, Kalpana is also widely recognized for her stage performances. Her live concerts have taken her across the globe, and in 2013, she headlined a special tribute concert honoring her mentor, Madurai T. Srinivasan.
