Murli Sharma Takes On An Unexpected Father Role In Netflix’s First Telugu Original 'Super Subbu'

Murli Sharma is moving to streaming with Super Subbu, a Telugu comedy drama that gives his OTT debut a distinctly family-led twist. The Netflix series, scheduled to premiere on July 2, also marks the platform’s first Telugu Original series, making the project significant for both the actor and Telugu streaming content.

Murli Sharma Makes His Netflix OTT Debut

The actor plays Kukkuteshwar Rao, a stern and tradition-bound father in the fictional village of Maakipur. His orderly world is shaken when his son chooses to become a sex education teacher, setting up a story that uses humour to address conversations many families still avoid.

Murli Sharma on why Super Subbu stood out

Speaking about the series, Murli said the appeal lay in its ability to balance comedy with a sensitive subject. “This is the kind of story that will make you laugh while also gently encouraging conversations that you are not very comfortable having,” he shared, describing the show as a mix of family dynamics, social themes and emotional moments.

He added that the world of Maakipur has been designed with eccentric but relatable characters. According to him, each person in the village adds to the humour and chaos, while still keeping the story grounded. For an actor known across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi cinema, the shift to OTT comes after more than three decades of screen work.

Murli said he was especially excited because Super Subbu is his first-ever streaming project. He also called the experience enjoyable because of familiar collaborators, including Sundeep Kishan, with whom he has worked on several films. He had also worked with director Mallik earlier, and shared screen space with Mithila Palkar in a Telugu film.

Kukkuteshwar Rao brings conflict and comedy

For Murli, Kukkuteshwar Rao was not written as a simple strict father. The actor described him as rigid, disciplined, irritating and annoying, but also entertaining because of those very qualities. He said the character’s body language, speech and mannerisms were carefully built to make him memorable on screen.

Murli also revealed that director Mallik had first discussed the idea while they were working on Tillu Square. By the time the script was officially narrated, he already had a strong sense that he wanted to be part of the show. The role, he said, gave him room to play a man audiences may find difficult, but still want to watch.

With Super Subbu, Netflix is entering Telugu originals through a story that leans on humour rather than heavy messaging. For Murli Sharma, the series offers a new platform and a fresh character, while giving viewers a family comedy built around a subject rarely discussed openly in mainstream entertainment.
