Palnadu (Pandiya Nadu) - Movie Review

Vishal is another Tamil actor, who has next biggest fan following after Surya and Karthi. His last release Dheeradu, the dubbed version of Tamil film Samar, was a big hit at the AP Box Office. Eight months after this movie, the actor is back with Palnadu, the Telugu version of Pandiya Naadu. The film is a quintessential revenge drama supported by taut narration and wonderful performances.

Palnadu is action thriller with good amount of entertainer elements. Vishal's electrifying performance, Suseenthiran's engaging screenplay, D Imman's music, R Madhi's cinematography, well-choreographed action, a few comedy scenes and dialogues are the highlights of the movie. But it is predictable in parts and the dragging narration in the second half mars the interest of the film goers.

Director Suseenthiran, who is known for his action flicks, has penned a routine revenge drama for Palnadu. A grieving father conceals his happiness with an awkward smile when he comes to learn that the man responsible for his son's death is dead too. He silently walks into his room, breathes a sigh of relief and picks up his crying grandson and takes a stroll.

The movie has some interesting twists and turns, which make the audience engaged and absorb in the narration. The director cashes in on a strong family bond to narrate an engaging revenge story sans any commercial cliches. The film has a very ordinary first half with a lot of focus on family drama and romance, but it takes a detour post-interval to give audiences an engaging climax. It steers away stereotypes and entertains with a very strong screenplay.

Palnadu Story

Palnadu Story

When the local don of Shankar Anna kicks the bucket, war ensues between his two brothers for the position he has left behind. It is just a matter of time when one of the remaining brothers Katam Ravi emerges victorious in the battle to take over the empire. Ravi runs several illegal businesses in the city and when an accident in his granite mining factory is leaked to media by a local government officer, he kills him. To avenge the death of the officer, his younger brother Shiva Kumar (Vishal) and father (Bharathiraja) set out to kill Ravi.

Suseenthiran's Direction In Palnadu

Suseenthiran's Direction In Palnadu

Suseenthiran knows exactly how to use his craft and never let goes off an opportunity to pleasantly surprise the audience. He did it recently with Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer and has now repeated it with Palnadu, which gives us a much needed face life to the genre. I loved the fact that he used the family tie to never strip the film off its emotional quotient, but use it poignantly to build an edge-of-the-seat narrative.

Vishal's Performance

Vishal's Performance

For the first time in his career, Vishal has shed his action hero avatar and it works in his favour. It was a welcome relief and helped audiences to instantly connect with his character in particular. He has given a knockout performance that makes you root for the actor in him.

Other Actors In Palnadu

Casting for other roles is also one among the biggest strengths of the film. Vikranth makes a comeback with an impressive cameo. Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja as the father is brilliant and his subtle relationship with Vishal stands out. Lakshmi Menon has also tried her best to do justice to her role.

Technical Stuff In Palnadu

Technical Stuff In Palnadu

Palnadu has sound technical elements and picturisation is main attraction in the technical front. Madhie's cinematography is top class especially during the chase sequences. Imman has given very good tunes for the film and his background score sets the mood of audience in several scenes.

Action - One Of Highlights In Palnadu

Action - One Of Highlights In Palnadu

The amateurish style action is appropriate, much better than most exaggerated action sequences in several Tamil films. The choreography of dance sequences is also commendable.

Palnadu Verdict

Palnadu Verdict

Overall, Palnadu is an engaging fare and it will impress Vishal's fans. It is a good entertainer for family audience. But the lackluster narration in the second half might disappoint a few film goers.
