Toofan - Movie Review: Ram Charan Rocks As Angry Cop

By Ramana Sp

Though Ram Charan had established as a hero in the Tollywood with a majority of his films were proved hits, he did not dare to enter the Bollywood till date. However, he had agreed to try his hands in a Hindi flick with a biggest hit of Bollywood and Big B's film Zanjeer's remake. The film was made in Hindi and Telugu, simultaneously, with some of the characters in the Telugu remake were played by Telugu artistes like Srihari and Thanikella Bharani, while the villain's role was played by Prakash Raj who is well known for the Hindi audiences too.

Why the Hindi remake retained the original title, the Telugu remake was christened as 'Toofan'. (It is worth mentioning here that Zanjeer had already been remade in Telugu long ago, with senior NT Rama Rao and Satyanarayana in the lead roles with the title 'Nippulanti Manishi' but that title was not retained for the latest remake).

ACP Vijay Khanna is an honest and tough cop, who likes to gets transferred often, rather than changing his attitude. Following his encounters with ruling party leaders in Hyderabad, he is transferred to Mumbai. As his first task, he takes up the investigation of murder case of a deputy collector. He finds that the oil mafia led by Rudra Pratap Teja is behind the murder. That is when he comes across a girl named Mala (Priyanka Chopra), who is the key witness in this case.

Toofan Story

Mala is an NRI girl. She visits India to attend a marriage and accidentally happens to see the killings of the deputy collector. Vijay seeks her help. By the time, he completes preparing the entire file, Teja uses his mafia influence and gets him suspended from the department. Vijay challenges Teja to prove his hand in the murder without the police power. He gets the help and cooperation of his friend Sher Khan (Srihari) and an investigative crime reporter Jayadev (Bharani) to send him behind the bars.

Ram Charan has delivered an excellent performance in Toofan. He looks handsome in a police uniform. His power-packed performance is true to his title Mega Power Star. He is a perfect match for the role of ACP Vijay Khanna. He has already proved that he is one of the best dancers in Tollywood and a mass hero and this has helped him very much in this film.

Priyanka Chopra Impresses Viewers In Debut Film

Priyanka Chopra Impresses Viewers In Debut Film

Priyanka Chopra too is pretty good in the role of Mala. She shakes her legs fantastically with Cherry in songs like 'Mumbai ke hero' and 'Pinky' songs. She will really impress the Telugu viewers with her glamour and humour. PC-Cherry chemistry is good to watch on screen.

Srihari-Ram Charan Combo Act

Srihari-Ram Charan Combo Act

The combination of Srihari and Ram Charan is already proved good in the earlier film Magadheera and it has been repeated once again in this film. It is well aware that Srihari is always good and effective in the supporting characters and many films have proved big hits because of Srihari's participation in them. Tanikella Bharani, Mahie Gill, Prakash Raj and others have also done brilliant job.

Technical Stuff in Toofan

Technical Stuff in Toofan

Gururaj R Jois' camera work is above average. At the same time, Chintu Singh's editing is not up to the mark. Meet Bros Anjjan, Chirantan Bhatt, Anand Raj Anand's music is just okay. While the tunes are good to hear, the re-recording appeared to be average. Telugu music directors could have given melodious tunes for the songs. As the film has been simultaneously made in Hindi and Telugu, the Telugu dialogues are not very effective.

Apoorva Lakhia's Direction In Toofan

Apoorva Lakhia's Direction In Toofan

Suresh Nair's screenplay is tight. Apoorva Lakhia's direction is good. He has maintained good pace from the beginning till the end. But he has ignored the basic stuff - entertainment quotient. Good comedy would give life to an action movie. Had he maintained some comedy track in the interludes, the film would have been a bigger hit.

Toofan Verdict

Toofan Verdict

If you watch the film without watching the earlier Zanjeer, this film would be good. Moreover, the director failed to maintain emotional bond between Ram Charan and Srihari's characters. Like other Telugu films in which Ram Charan played, this Hindi movie failed in maintaining the mass masala scenes and punch dialogues. However, with the director maintaining a less run time the film appeared very compact and good.
