Alludu Seenu Review: A Blessed Son Sans Talent

By Haricharan Pudipeddi, Ians

A young boy (Bellamkonda Srinivas) in his 20s goes to his highly successful producer father (Bellamkonda Suresh) and tells him that he wants to become a hero. The father decides to have a larger-than-life launch pad for him. He calls one of his proteges (VV Vinayak) and discusses the idea of making a film with his son. The following conversation must have happened between them:

Father: "My son is ready. He wants to become a hero. He's your responsibility now."
Director: "That's wonderful but I'm on the verge of starting my next film. Can't this wait?"
Father: "Absolutely not! Remember I gave you a break in the industry, you're first film was funded from my pocket?"
Director: "How can I forget that? I owe you my career."
Father: "Good. Let's make this film then. Budget shouldn't be a problem. Make sure my son has the best launch."
Director: "But I need time to pen a story!"
Father: "Don't worry about that. Let's bring Kona Venkat on board, ask him to rewrite one of his old stories with some minor changes. He can do it. He's been doing it for so many years now."
Director: "Good idea. But shouldn't your son undergo a crash course in acting?"
Father: "Why? Audiences don't pay money to see him act. They pay money for entertainment. Let's just concentrate on roping in a pretty actress."
Director: "Makes sense. Which actress do you have in mind?"
Father: "Samantha? She's pretty and has been successful lately."
Director: "She's been acting with top heroes? I don't think she will agree to work with your son."
Father: "Don't worry about that. We'll pay a hefty sum and convince her." (She is eventually signed for the project)
Director: "What about the rest of the cast? We should definitely have Brahmanandam."
Father: "Most definitely! We can't take chances without him." (He is eventually signed and turns out to be the saving grace of the film)
Director: "Let's include an item number as well. What say?"
Father: "Good idea. Let's cast someone sexier than our heroine. I don't mind paying her a bomb!"
Director: "Tamanna Bhatia. I will request her to do this song and I'm sure she won't refuse." (She is eventually signed as well.)
Father: "We've already spent too much time discussing. I'm leaving rest of the casting to you. Have a few prominent comedians, villains and we should definitely go abroad for songs. My son has never gone out of the country."
Director: "Let's explore Sharjah this time. I'll have Prakash Raj in a dual role."
Father: "Most important. The title should have my son's name in it. Think of something very catchy?"
Director: "Let's call it 'Alludu Seenu'. His character's name would be Seenu (short for Srinivas) and he gets to marry the daughter of a Bhai and becomes his alludu (son-in-law)."
Father: "Very good. I like how creative you've become over the years. Who could've thought of such a catchy title?"
Director: "When do we start shooting?"
Father: "Soon. By the way, I want you to have some awe-inspiring stunts for my son. He should make Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan look like clowns with his action. Take special care about it."
Director: "You don't have to worry. I'll take extra care about it. I'll watch a few Hollywood action films if I need to."

A few months later, the film is made and released in the maximum number of cinemas. Alludu Seenu, which narrates a done to death story in the most cliched format possible, is the story of a blessed son with no talent.

Alludu Seenu is an average fare that does not deal with fresh concept. But it promises to be a good commercial entertainer. It is a good launch pad for debutant Srinivas. It can be watched once.

Director VV Vinayak, adept at handling commercial entertainers involving established stars, has attempted to do something similar with a newcomer. In one scene, we see Sai Srinivas jump off a high rise without harness to save Samantha. It would take a Tom Cruise, Shah Rukh or Salman Khan to make such an incredulous scene appear believable. In Alludu Seenu, the audience just cracks up. Therein lies the difference.

VV Vinayak brand value and Bellamkonda Suresh's publicity for this film are the main reason for good openings for the movie. The film comes across with the right kind of formula that is blended with entertainment and action. The first half goes on a lighter note with elements of comedy, some romance, a little bit of action and drama. The interval bang was alright and it is the second half that has got an element of melodrama and sentiment.

Alludu Seenu has good songs and a couple of good comedy scenes in the second half. It is an average entertainer with absolutely nothing novel to offer. This film is strictly not for audience who look for variety. It is a formulaic mass entertainer that will have to bank heavily on the brand name of Vinayak and other commercial elements to click at the box office.

Vinayak though selected a routine film which people watched many times on silver screen gave his mass touch with his trademark punches, dialogues and comedy scenes. It will be a pure treat to masses and had he included little twists and turns, it would have done wonders to Alludu Seenu taking it to next level.

Alludu Seenu is a quintessential V.V.Vinayak film with heart thumping action sequences, sentiment, humour, beautiful views and sizzling glamour. Brahmanandam is at his hilarious best and every scene he is in will leave the audience in splits. Prakash Raj carries off his double role with ease while Samantha adds the glamour quotient with her skimpy outfits.

Alludu Seenu is a routine story told in a predictable way with right mix of comedy, action, romance and glamour. The revenge drama gets into predictable mode once the twists gets revealed and remind us of several other Telugu movies including Gudumba Shankar, Aadi, Ready, Baadshah, Aata etc.

Director VV Vinayak put in all the elements expected from a mass, commercial entertainer. Of course, working with a new hero is rather difficult as it is very hard to experiment, but he has a superb line-up of technicians, actors and a producer ready to pump in money. Naturally, one expects a film on the lines of Adhurs. Despite some punch lines and a couple of satires, he failed in making an entertainer.

Alludu Seenu is a more appropriate and readymade launch platform arranged for Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas to excel from here on. Commercially, there is no solid reason to compare Sai's debut with Ramcharan, Mahesh Babu or others. Anyways, Bellamkonda Suresh had the guts to dream Sai on par with Star Sons and future will decide where Sai really stands in the race.

Vinayak came with routine mass entertainer with nothing new. Viewers will be reminded of many hit films while watching the film. He might have selected a safe subject considering Srinivas' debut. Songs acted as speedbrakers in the film. Vinayak for all his reputation of catching the pulse of the masses failed in his screenplay and direction.

Alludu Seenu offers nothing new particularly, but can be a watchable movie for the debutant, if not you can skip.
