Introduction:
Balagam, which means support in the form of people, is set in a rural backdrop of a village in Telangana. The movie marks the directorial debut of comedian Venu Tillu aka Venu Yeldandi. The narrative is around Komurayya's family whose issues are discussed underneath the traditional family sentiment of 'Kaki Muttadam,' a formality that is offered to the dead.
The idea is simple- discussing a family issue like sibling rivalry with a touch of the nativity. A traditional element was added to twist the entire plot on it and the result was amazing. Balagam is backed by none other than Dil Raju and his daughter Hanshitha Reddy who acted as the producer of the film. The movie was made on a budget of about Rs 4 Crore and it earned Rs 9 Crore, along with widespread acclaim and appreciation.
Story:
In a village, a patriarch named Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy) lives and he has two sons and a daughter. He is a happy-go-lucky man who is dear to everyone and lives with his elder son's family consisting of Sailu (Priyadarshi). Priyadarshi is in debt and wants to come out of it by marrying a girl who brings him a dowry. However, destiny has something else in store for him as his grandfather Komarayya suddenly dies and loan sharks are behind him.
Performances:
Starting with Priyadarshi, who proved his mettle by playing varied kinds of roles since his debut as a comedian. Actress Kavya Kalyanram, who appeared notable in Masooda did well in the role offered to her, in which she was adequate. Sudhakar Reddy as Komarayya and all the other actors have played their characters to the T. The flow of the scenes is natural and the plot is universal, which made Balagam a super successful film at the box office as well as on the OTT.
Technical Aspects:
Director Venu Yeldandi got a great platform to explore and translate his vision onto celluloid in the very first attempt itself. He made the movie a smooth ride which is highly emotional and touching. The cinematography by Acharya Venu, who is also a debutant, was met with applause. Bheems Ceciroleo composed the film's music, which is just on point, complimenting the story, tradition, and narration.
Positives:
Story
Direction
Performances
Music
Visuals
Negatives:
A bit dramatic
Lengthy narration
Verdict:
Balagam is a movie that seldom comes across for a watch in theatres with great production values. The movie gave life to several technicians and actors, along with raking the moolah. Balagam is a must-watch film for Telugu-speaking people. Balagam is honest, and grounded. It is a special movie.
