Devara Introduction
NTR Jr, the man of the masses is back on the big screen after a long wait of six years as a protagonist. The movie written and directed by Koratala Siva in his second collaboration with NTR Jr carries sky-high hype and was released to a humongous response on September 27 in five languages worldwide.
NTR Jr is playing a dual role in the film and Janhvi Kapoor is making her Tollywood debut along with Saif Ali Khan with the movie which has its music and score by Anirudh Ravichander.
Devara Story
Devara (Jr NTR) is a leader of Erra Samudram, a conglomeration of four villages on the hill near Ratnagiri. He along with Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan) and Rayappa (Srikanth) accept money in exchange for looting the container ships for Muruga (Murali Sharma). One day, when Devara finds out that the shipment has weapons that are being used against people, he decides to stop the activity which enrages Bhaira.
Bhaira then uses Rayappa to plot the death of Devara. After killing all of them who attacked him, Devara leaves a message for the villagers and Bhaira that he will not spare anyone if they dare to go to the sea for smuggling. After 12 years, Vara (Jr NTR) Devara's son grows up into a coward. Bhaira then sends Vara to the sea to steal a shipment full of weapons. Did Devara attack his son Vara? How did Devara disappear? The answers to these questions form the crux of Devara: Part 1.
Analysis
NTR Jr is a terrific performer and he pulls crowds with his image only. The actor never disappoints when it comes to his acting prowess and dance moves that only he can pull off without rehearsals. In Devara, NTR Jr attempted a dual role, which didn't work out in his favour in the past. Devara and Vara are two different characters with stark contrasting characteristics. Both characters will connect with the fans and film buffs as Tarak effortlessly manages to perform his portion with ease.
In action sequences and emotional scenes, Tarak showcased his technique in Koratala Siva's film. The story is predictable but the narrative is a paisa vasool deal for fans.
Performances
Needless to say, NTR Jr delivers a stunning and clap-worthy performance in the movie as Devara and Vara. Saif Ali Khan got a decent role in the film and in the second half, his prominence was cut down. Janhvi Kapoor as Thanga enters the scene only in the second half and has strictly four scenes and a song in which she grabs attention. She has nothing much to do in a movie that has no scope for a female lead character, at least in the first part.
The establishment of a few characters like the one played by Prakash Raj, Srikanth, etc could have been more elaborate. The premise where Prakash Raj's character narrates Devara's story to Ajay's character in the film remains a question. Fans will enjoy 'Aayudha Pooja' song in the theatres as well as the 'Fear' song. However, 'Daavudi' song has been chopped off due to runtime issues.
Technical Aspects
Anirudh Ravichander's background score and music played a key role in making Devara as what was on the screen. Rathnavelu's experience as a premiere cinematographer is visible throughout every frame of the film. The movie's production values and technical aspects are top-notch with a special mention to the film's VFX.
