Introduction
Superstar Mahesh Babu joined forces with Tollywood's one of the most epic filmmakers, Trivikram Srinivas for the third time after 12 years. Titled Guntur Kaaram, the latest family action drama that showcased Mahesh Babu in a rustic and rugged avatar, bringing out his mass side, hit the screens to a humongous response as a Sankranti release on January 12.
Ahead of its release, Guntur Kaaram made a mammoth pre-release advance bookings, which amount to over Rs 15 Crore from India alone, a record feat for a regional film, which speaks volumes about Mahesh Babu's box office stamina.
Guntur Kaaram Story
Bogineni Veera Venkata Ramana (Mahesh Babu) lives with his father Satyam (Jayaram) in Guntur. His mother Vasundhara (Ramya Krishnan) re-marries (Rao Ramesh) after Satyam goes to jail for a murder. Ramana loses his vision in his left eye partly after a fire accident in Mirchi's yard during his childhood. Ramana is summoned by JDP party leader Venkata Swamy (Prakash Raj), his maternal grandfather to sign a document that legally states that he doesn't get any share of their property to which Ramana disagrees and insists on meeting his mother. However, Venkata Swamy doesn't assure. Enters Paani (Murali Sharma), Vasundhara's lawyer, who sends his daughter Amukthamalya aka Ammu (Sreeleela) with an assistant (played by Vennela Kishore) to Ramana's house for the signature. As resistance continues, Venkata Swamy pushes a false accusation on Ramana and vandalizes his house, trying to get him arrested. An enraged Ramana retorts by destroying Venkata Swamy's house coming face-to-face with his mother Vasundhara who slaps him and refers to him as garbage. Embarrassed and hurt, Ramana signs away on the documents. What happens next? Why Vasundhara estranges Ramana? Who caused the fire accident? Why did Satyam go to jail and for killing whom? How did Ramana pull through all of this? forms the crux of Guntur Kaaram?
Performances
Mahesh Babu stole the show with his stellar performance single-handedly even with several notable actors being placed around him. The actor is a treat on the big screen in his get-up of Ramana, a youngster who stops at nothing. His dialogue delivery, body language, and improved dance moves are a treat to the fans, who have been waiting for the superstar to hit a befitting success at the box office. Guntur Kaaram is that film.
Analysis
The movie has everything that one could ask for, in terms of casting, budget, and crew. However, the only thing that is required to make a film super successful or even a basic success is the core story. Guntur Kaaram lacks it, in addition to the poor writing and execution. From the day Guntur Kaaram was launched, there have been several obstacles and when it was finally released, fans at first celebrated the suave actor's mass presence and his cheesy dialogues. But, they still felt dissatisfied with how the movie turned out to be.
Technical Aspects
The movie's cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and P.S. Vinod looks refreshing and the visuals are stunning. Except for a few scenes and the climax, the background score was passable. None of the songs linger around for a while but Mahesh Babu's improved dance moves are impressive.
