Umair Ibn Lateef was born on May 25, 1998, in Srinagar, Kashmir. He is the first Kashmiri actor to enter the Kollywood film industry. Now 25 years old, Umair spent his entire childhood in Harwan. At the age of 17, he moved to Tamil Nadu to pursue further opportunities. More than just an actor, Umair is also an entrepreneur, model, and content creator with a strong presence on Instagram and YouTube.
Umair completed his schooling while staying with his grandparents in Srinagar. He later moved to Chennai for his undergraduate degree, pursuing Commerce at Hindustan University. In a recent interview, he mentioned that after college hours, he would assist at his father's handloom shop in Mahabalipuram, where they sold Kashmiri handloom and handicraft products. After graduating, he returned to Kashmir and launched a shop focused on port-related items, while also working as a model for various brands.
Umair Ibn Lateef is a multilingual talent. He is fluent in English, Kashmiri, Tamil, Urdu, and Hindi. Interestingly, he learned Tamil from his college friends and has since developed a charming local slang that audiences love. He is now working on learning other South Indian languages to further expand his versatility.
In 2024, director Rajkumar Periyasamy met Umair at his father's shop in Mahabalipuram. Impressed by Umair's modeling portfolio, fluency in Tamil, and Kashmiri background, Rajkumar invited him to audition for the role of Waheed Ahmed, an army soldier, in the film Amaran. Umair’s performance was so authentic and moving that he landed the role. The film marked his Kollywood debut and earned him widespread recognition, along with a Special Mention Award for his performance.
Umair was also the host of the 22nd Chennai International Film Festival, a prestigious event in Tamil cinema. His confident stage presence and multilingual skills impressed both the audience and industry insiders.
