'Jallikattu' is based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh and stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissary, the movie was selected as India's official entry to the Oscars 2021. The movie is about a wild beast that has taken over a butcher shop. The film earned a lot of positive reviews after having its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019. Pellissery also won the best director trophy at the 50th International Film Festival of India in 2019.

The controversial movie "Dam 999," which was outlawed in Tamil Nadu, was nomianated for Best Picture at the 2011 Academy Awards. In addition, three songs from the movie are among the 39 songs chosen for the Original Songs category of the Academy Awards.The movie made at a budget of $10 million is directed by Sohan Roy.

Guru was selected as India's official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category. It was the 1st Malayalam film submitted by India for the Oscars. The film was written and directed by Rajeev Anchal and featured Mohanlal in a significant role. It tells the story of the disruption of religious harmony and how people are easily blinded by it. Guru won three Kerala State Film Awards for Best Costume Designer, Best Art Director, and Best Make-Up Artist in 1997. The movie released in theaters, has not been able to rake in big numbers and has been a huge flop.

Based on Shakespeare's classic Macbeth, Veeram's soundtrack 'We Will Rise' was nominated for the Original Song category at the 89th Academy Awards. Jeff Roan, who is known for films like Phantom, God of Water, and Traffic III, has composed the music for Veeram, and Kari Kimmel has crooned the number. The film was written and directed by Jayaraj. Starring Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor in the significant role, 'Veeram' marked his debut in Malayalam cinema. It is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Malayalam cinema and was made with a budget of Rs  35 crores.

Adaminte Makan Abu was the second Malayalam film to represent India in the fight for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Helmed by directed by debutant filmmaker, Salim Ahmed, the film is about an old man's struggle to go to Hajj. Salim Kumar, who played the lead in the film, is regarded as giving his best acting performance to date. The film did well in Indian award circuits by winning four trophies at the national awards and Special Jury Award at IFFI.
