Guru won three Kerala State Film Awards for Best Costume Designer, Best Art Director, and Best Make-Up Artist in 1997. The movie released in theaters, has not been able to rake in big numbers and has been a huge flop.

Based on Shakespeare's classic Macbeth, Veeram's soundtrack 'We Will Rise' was nominated for the Original Song category at the 89th Academy Awards. Jeff Roan, who is known for films like Phantom, God of Water, and Traffic III, has composed the music for Veeram, and Kari Kimmel has crooned the number. The film was written and directed by Jayaraj. Starring Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor in the significant role, 'Veeram' marked his debut in Malayalam cinema. It is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Malayalam cinema and was made with a budget of Rs  35 crores.

Adaminte Makan Abu

Adaminte Makan Abu was the second Malayalam film to represent India in the fight for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Helmed by directed by debutant filmmaker, Salim Ahmed, the film is about an old man's struggle to go to Hajj. Salim Kumar, who played the lead in the film, is regarded as giving his best acting performance to date. The film did well in Indian award circuits by winning four trophies at the national awards and Special Jury Award at IFFI.
