On May 21, 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was tragically assassinated in a suicide bombing during an election campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The attack, which killed 15 people including Gandhi and injured over 40 others, was carried out by Kalaivani Rajaratnam, a 22-year-old operative linked to the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). Disguised as a supporter, she approached Gandhi under the guise of seeking his blessing and detonated an RDX-laden explosive belt, instantly killing herself, Gandhi, and many nearby. The chilling moment was captured by local photographer S. Haribabu, who also lost his life in the blast.

Following the assassination, Rajiv Gandhi’s body was flown to New Delhi, where it was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for autopsy, reconstruction, and embalming. His state funeral was held on May 24, 1991, drawing leaders and dignitaries from more than 60 countries and broadcast live across the globe. He was cremated at Veerbhumi, along the banks of the Yamuna River, beside the memorials of his family members, including Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The assassination sent shockwaves through the nation, sparking widespread investigations and allegations of conspiracy. It led to the formation of two separate commissions of inquiry and had profound political consequences, including the eventual collapse of Prime Minister I.K. Gujral's government.
