The love-hate story of Rajesh Khanna, Dimple Kapadia

Rajesh Khanna married actress Dimple Kapadia in March 1973. Dimple Kapadia was 16 at that time and Rajesh Khanna was 15 years older than her. But that did not stop the lovers from tying the knot. The marriage happened six months before Dimple Kapadia's debut film Bobby released, which gave her the title of a sex bomb.

Before meeting Dimple, Rajesh Khanna was madly in love with Anju Mahendru. The couple was in live-in relationship for seven years. But due to some differences they separated and did not speak to each other for next 17 years.

Dimple Kapadia was Rajesh Khanna's huge fan at that time. Dimple was dating her Bobby's co-star Rishi Kapoor before meeting Kaka. It was said that Rajesh Khanna always had a fascination for Raj Kapoor's heroines. So, when he got so much of attention from Raj's heroine, Dimple, he did not waste any time to propose her for marriage. Rumour has it that when Dimple accepted his proposal, Rajesh Khanna made her throw the ring into the sea that Rishi Kapoor gifted her to prove her loyalty towards Rajesh Khanna.

The grand marriage reception of India's first superstar was held at Hotel Horizon, Juhu, Mumbai. Bollywood's who's who attended the reception. The star couple Rajesh and Dimple later went to Europe for their honeymoon. Rajesh Khanna also threw a grand party to celebrate Dimple's 16th birthday at Hilton Hotel in Europe.

After marriage Rajesh Khanna did not allow Dimple to work in movies. So, Dimple often used to accompany Rajesh Khanna on his movie sets. However, their love did not last long and the couple started living separately. The reason for their separation was that Rajesh Khanna was always busy with his films, so Dimple also decided to comeback in films but Kaka wanted her to stay at home and take care of his two daughters, Twinkle and Rinkie. Also, his bad habits took a toll on their relationship. Interestingly, even after living separately both of them never applied for divorce.

In the meantime, Rajesh Khanna found solace in the company of Tina Munim. She worked with Rajesh Khanna in many movies and fell in love with him. But that relation also did not last long. Reportedly, Tina wanted to marry Rajesh, but he thought if he will marry Tina it will have a bad impact on his daughters. After breakup, Tina left Bollywood and went to America for studies.

After, many years Dimple and Rajesh Khanna were seen together again, when Dimple started campaigning for the actor for his political rallies. Dimple Kapadia was also by his side during his last days. She was the pillar of strength for the ailing superstar. Though they were living separately, Dimple was always there for him in his tough time. Also, their son-in-law, Akshay played a very important role in reuniting the family again. Akshay made sure that Rajesh Khanna is always surrounded by his family during his illness.

The living legend died on 18 July. His wife Dimple and his entire family was there by his side till his last breath. After Rajesh Khanna's death Dimple was inconsolable and held his lifeless hand tightly.
