You might be aware of Bollywood celebrities who made it to the top, coming from humble background. But very few of us think about stars who at one time had the whole world under their feet, and then vanish into oblivion, overburdened by physical and emotional stress!

Parveen Babi, Vimi, Bharat Bhushan, Achala Sachdev, AK Hangal, Raj Kiran...these are all actors who at one point had everything going for them - love, money and fame. But before they knew, all was lost and nobody needed them anymore. They lived a painful life, full of loneliness and poverty, away from the glitter and glitz of Bollywood, only to be remembered long after they were dead and buried!

Not long ago, Actress Antara Mali's father, famous photographer Jagdish Mali was spotted begging on the streets of Mumbai. He was noticed by a model named Mink who called up Salman Khan, who sent four assistants and a car to drop Mali home.

A little later, the cameraman's daughter Antara Mali issued a statement saying her father didn't need help and termed the reports as publicity stunts. The enraged Salman then slammed back saying, "What is the daughter saying? Her father was walking down Yari Road without clothes, now who needs help?".

AK Hangal, who essayed many roles as father and grand father to many stars since 1967 died at the age of 95, battling poverty along with old age ailments. His 74-year-old son Vijay too was unwell and was struggling to pay for their medicines.

Though his film Albela did extremely well at the box office, his films Jhamela and Labela bombed at the box office and then offers stopped coming. He then had to live the rest of his life in a dirty chawl in Panvel, Mumbai.

A legend of his time, Bharat Bhushan did not save much and hence he was left with no money. He also worked as a watchman in a film studio and did small roles on TV and low budget movies in his last days. Bharat Bhushan passed away in the year 1992 in a rented apartment.

Raj Kiran, who was part of hit films like Arth, Karz and Saarthak has been living in a mental asylum in USA's Atlanta for over ten years. The actor suddenly went missing from the scene, and it was Rishi Kapoor who had acted with him in Karz who found him. It seems that Kiran's wife had cheated on him and that made him very depressed, and he slowly lost his emotional balance.

Vimi, who made her debut in B.R. Chopra's Hamraaz (1967) became a very popular name among moviegoers. Her Marwari businessman husband Shiv Agarwal then began dictating terms to producers. This angered the producers who stopped giving work to Vimi. The actress then divorced her husband, but could not get support from her family or the industry. She then began living with a small time producer Jolly and became an alcoholic. Vimi was only in her thirties when she died in the general ward of Nanavati Hospital on August 22, 1977. You will be further shocked to know that Vimi's body was taken for cremation on a chanawalla's thela!

Mandakini

Mandakini

Mandakini, who was once rumoured to be linked up with Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim got many films, thanks to her link-up with Dawood. Her photographs with Dawood Ibrahim in 1994 got people talking and Mandakini went away from the industry. She is now running a Tibetan yoga class with her husband in Andheri, Mumbai and has converted herself to Buddhism.
