The film, featuring an intriguing plot around a gold burglar, generated considerable buzz upon its release. Despite the initial hype, "Japan" fell short of box office expectations in both Tamil and Telugu markets. Released alongside Karthik Subbaraj's "Jigarthanda Double X," the latter received positive reviews, surpassing "Japan" and emerged as the box office champion.

Karthi's 'Japan' Faces Theater Decline, OTT Release Accelerated

Reports indicated that "Japan" marked a significant setback in actor Karthi's career, with a rapid decline in theatre screenings just a week after its release. The dwindling number of theatres showcasing the film prompted plans for its swift release on OTT platforms. In various cities, screenings of movies like "Leo" and "Jigarthanda Double X" took precedence following the removal of "Japan" from theaters.

Netflix secured the film's OTT rights. Originally, Netflix intended to unveil the film in the second or third week of December before its release. However, owing to the negative reception post-release, the decision was made to advance the film's debut to the first week of December. Consequently, an announcement regarding the film's OTT release is anticipated to surface shortly.

There's a buzz that this film might stream on Netflix between December 1st or 8th, though there's no official confirmation yet. The news of its Netflix release is trending, and an official announcement is anticipated soon. Reportedly, Netflix secured the digital rights for about Rs.20 crores, intending to stream the movie in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages.

Japan Cast, Crew, And Other Details

The "Japan" cast includes notable names such as Karthi, Anu Emmanuel, Jithan Ramesh, Sunil, Vijay Milton, Vagai Chandrasekhar, and Bava Chelladurai. The film was officially announced in August 2022, kicking off its journey towards the big screen. Principal photography commenced in November, with Thoothukudi serving as the backdrop for the first schedule, which wrapped up in mid-December. Following a short hiatus, the second schedule in Chennai began a week after the first concluded, promising a visual treat for moviegoers.

One of the highlights of "Japan" is its music, crafted by the acclaimed G. V. Prakash Kumar. This marks his fifth collaboration with Karthi, following previous successful ventures such as "Aayirathil Oruvan" (2010), "Saguni" (2012), "Komban" (2015), and "Sardar" (2022). Notably, this project marks his first partnership with director Raju.
