Salman Khan Convicted; Gets Five Years In Jail

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was on Wednesday sentenced to five years in jail for a 2002 hit-and-run accident that left one man dead and four others injured.

Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande announced the verdict at a packed court. Earlier, the actor was found guilty on most of the charges levelled against him in the incident that took place in suburban Bandra.

He is likely to be taken into police custody soon and taken to the Arthur Road Central Jail in south Mumbai. According to reports, Salman Khan was shocked, lowered his head with tears in his eyes.

ANI reported, "Salman Khan had no expression on his face, no tears, head was tilted down when Judge D W Deshpande announced a 5yr jail term."

They also said, "Salman Khan shocked by sentence, sits down and breaks down into tears."

Speaking to the media,prosecution lawyer Abha Singh said that the day's verdict proves that no one is above law.

She added that the court concluded that Salman Khan was really driving the car.

Another prosecution lawyer, Pradeep Gharat, said, "We tried our best to bring the truth to light. We wanted the accused to get maximum punishment so that no one dares to repeat a crime like that."
