The late 73-year-old renowned Tabla player Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola and their two daughters - Isabella Qureshi and Anisa Qureshi. Back in 1978, the madly-in-love with each other couple, Zakir Hussain and Antonia Minnecola tied the knot without informing his mother.
Antonia Minnecola, an Italian-American, was a Kathak dancer and a teacher, as per reports. Antonia also worked as late Zakir Hussain's manager. The two had met during their formal training days in Tabla and Kathak in the late 1970s in the Bay Area of California. The couple got married 8 years after their first meeting.

The journey form dating to marriage was not an easy ride as Zakir Hussain was an Indian Muslim, while Antonia was an Italian-American. In an episode of 'Rendezvous With Simi Garewal', Zakir Hussain revealed how he got married with Antonia without informing his mother.
Recalling the event, Zakir Hussain was quoted saying, "In my family, this was the first mixed marriage. So more than my father, it was my mother who had a tough time with it. It was very difficult for her (to accept the marriage). We didn't tell her (about our marriage) until I was already married. But my father was there, he married us off in a Muslim ceremony. But the civil ceremony, which was the first one, no one knew. We just went and did it. (sic)"
"I think (my father) took on the responsibility of explaining (about my marriage) to my mother. I think the way he explained it was, he came and said, 'Well, it's done, just live with it' (laughs). Over the years, my mother met her, understood her, and liked the person, and she worked her way beyond those ways of traditions and religions and found that the person was the most important aspect of the relationship. She loves Toni and thinks the world of her, (sic)" he had added.
