Speaking exclusively to Filmibeat's Hesha Chimah, Sudha Chandran expressed her reservations about excessive experimentation with classical dance forms. Calling herself a "purist," she emphasized the need to respect traditional art forms while making changes to them.
"I am a purist. I feel, don't touch the things that are made. See, in the name of modernity, or trying to experiment to do something different, don't make it a caricature. See, evolvement is a different thing. Our purists, the Bharatnatyam dancers before us, they were purists. We have modified them a little. We haven't tried to evolve to such a level that they look very vulgar. You can't do that," the actress said.
She believes classical art can be adapted, but there is no need to modernize it to the point where it loses its essence.
