The Diplomat Film Review: After a brief hiatus, John Abraham makes a powerful comeback with The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair. His last big-screen appearance was in Vedaa (2024) which failed to make a mark at the box office, and now, he is back with a gripping narrative that promises high-stakes drama and intense performances.

On the occasion of Holi today (March 14), The Diplomat has finally hit the theatres. Did the film succeed in entertaining fans? Well, let's find out in this spoiler-free The Diplomat review.

Take a Poll

THE DIPLOMAT PLOT REVIEW

The film revolves around an Indian woman who unexpectedly gets trapped in Pakistan amid a web of conspiracies. Desperate to return to her home in India, she finds an ally in an Indian diplomat who takes it upon himself to ensure her safe return. Risking his own life, he navigates through political tensions and dangerous obstacles to bring her back across the border.

Inspired by true events from 2017, The Diplomat recounts the real-life rescue of Uzma Ahmed (essayed by Saadia Khateeb), facilitated by the late External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The film takes its time setting up the premise, making the first half feel a bit slow-paced. However, the momentum picks up in the second half, offering more engaging sequences.

Unlike John Abraham's usual action-packed roles, this film presents him in a more strategic and different avatar. Well, fans have always loved him in such characters.
While the film effectively builds patriotic emotions, a noticeable drawback is its heavy focus on John Abraham. Despite an ensemble cast filled with many talented actors, the narrative primarily revolves around his character, giving less screen time to other talented actors.

THE DIPLOMAT ACTING REVIEW

John Abraham, as expected, delivers a solid performance as JP Singh, an Indian diplomat stationed in Pakistan. His restrained yet impactful portrayal adds depth to the character and storyline. Saadia Khateeb, playing Uzma Ahmed, impresses with her nuanced performance, making her scenes truly memorable and heartfelt.

Supporting actors Kumud Mishra, Sharib Hashmi, and Revathi also contribute significantly with impactful performances, adding layers to the film's storytelling.

THE DIPLOMAT FINAL VERDICT

While The Diplomat has a compelling premise and strong performances, a more balanced screen presence for all characters and a fast-paced first half could have elevated it further. However, the film succeeds in evoking a sense of patriotism. Overall, it's a decent watch for those interested in politically charged dramas.
