Early career Kalyan was born in Durban, South Africa. His mother, Santosh Vinita Kalyan, is an MP of the South African National Assembly where she represents the Democratic Alliance.
Prior to moving abroad, he has performed a number of productions in South Africa, including theatrical adaptations of Charles Dickens\' Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Salman Rushdie\'s The Ground Beneath Her Feet, and the classical Shakespearean play Macbeth.
British and Irish television appearances In 2005, He moved to London to pursue his acting career where he gained roles in the BBC series Holby City (series 8) as Arjmand Younis, in Spooks (series 5), and on the Irish network RTÉ One in Fair City as Ramal Kirmani. He also appeared in a number of independent films.
American Television He starred on the American CW sitcom, Aliens in America which follows a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. The student (played by Kalyan) turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan.
He was recently cast as a recurring character on the second half of the fifth season of cable show Nip/Tuck.
