Jamal Roberts has created a history. He is the first-ever black man to win American Idol in 22 years. Yes, you read that right! He was crowned the American Idol Season 23 winner after he walked away with over 26 million votes.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, Jamal Roberts, Breanna Nix and John Foster put up a thrilling singing battle in the finale on Sunday while vying for the winner's title. While Jamal became the winner, John and Breanna grabbed the ranks of first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.

After winning the grand title, he took to his Instagram and expressed gratitude. Sharing a picture of him from the finale, he penned a lengthy heartfelt note that read, "I'm still trying to process this... God is so good. 🙏🏾

From my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called American Idol. This journey has been bigger than me, and I'm so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.

Most of all, I hope my girls see this and know that with faith, hard work, and heart, anything is possible. To my city, my family, and everyone out there grinding for something greater, this is our victory.

American Idol Season 23 Winning Prize Money

The American Idol season 23 champion Jamal Roberts is said to have been offered a recording deal with Hollywood Records. According to last year's Newsweek report, the winner gets a whopping $250,000 winning prize. Out of which, he will receive $125,000 and the rest $100,000 he will get once he completes an entire album.

The 27-year-old PE teacher (Physical Education) teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, Jamal Roberts, clinched the title of American Idol season 23 winner during the live ABC broadcast of the blockbuster finale.

Jamal Roberts is a proud dad of three girls. Throughout the season, Jamal's daughters - Harmoni (6), Lyrik (4) - became frequent visitors on sets. Recently in April this year, he welcomed his third daughter Gianna Grace. As per HT, Jamal Roberts is married and his wife likes to maintain a low profile.

Turns out, before clinching his American Idol Season 23 coveted trophy, he'd auditioned for the show twice before but didn't make it this far. During an interview, as reported by Good Housekeeping, Jamal said, "I didn't get defeated."

"I never gave up. I took the no. I've always been able to take constructive criticism and use it for my gain and try again. This has always been me, (sic)" he further added.

During the same interview, Jamal revealed that he started singing when he was just 2 years old. "My grandparents found out I could sing, and I started singing in church and [covering] the Temptations and Michael Jackson. I had a granddaddy on my dad's side who was a bishop and a grandad on my mom's side was a deacon, so I was in church every time the door opened. I was the usher, and I was in the choir, and I used to play the drums, (sic)" he further added.
