Thaniyavarthanam movie revolves around a family whose male members have a history of lunacy. Balanmash (Mammootty) who is a middle class schoolteacher hailing from an old tharavadu. His uncle became a mental patient after the separation of his love and this underlined the deep-routed belief among their family that one male from each generation will become mad. For no reason Balan was labelled as the culprit when every one knew that he wasn't.
