Punyalan Private Limited, the much awaited sequel to the superhit movie Punyalan Agarbathis, has hit the theatres today (November 17, 2017). Directed by Ranjith Sankar, Punyalan Private Limited has its script penned by the director himself. In fact, the film has been jointly produced and distributed by the actor-director duo.
Plot
In Punyalan Private Limited, Joy Thakkolkkaran is all set to try his hands at a new venture and that is to start a mineral water business and he aims to conquer the world market. But, once again he has to face some major issues and obstacles and how he deals with them, forms the crux of the story.

Jaysurya As Joy Thakkolkkaran
It's never easy to portray a character from a prequel with the same vigour and conviction. But Jayasurya does it with ease and hence, it is a sheer pleasure to watch him as Joy Thakkolkkaran on screen, once again. Be it in looks or dialogue delivery, he has maintained the same credibility and this time he has had the chance to do more serious sequences, which he pulls off effectively.
Aju Varghese As Greenu
Disappointingly, Aju Varghese is only seen in very few sequences. His role is limited and we get to see him conversing with Joy through skype and chat. Well, we definitely wanted more of Greenu in the sequel, as well.
Sreejith Ravi As Abhayakumar
Sreejith Ravi as Abhayakumar was one of the major highlights of the prequel. In Punyalan Private Limited too, he takes you for a fun ride with his effective portrayal of Abhayakumar. At the same time, one would get a feel that the character is more idiotic here than in its prequel.
Dharmajan As Peer Thanesh
Dharmajan is the latest addition to the franchise and the actor, plays the role of an advocate named Peer Thanesh. He does exactly what was expected from him and keeps the audiences entertained with his sensible one-liners.
Rest Of the Cast
Sunil Sukhada reprises his role of the judge from the prequel and he fits well in to the role. Vijayaraghavan plays the role of a Chief Minister and we have seen him in such roles even in the past and its a cakewalk for an actor like him. Guinness Pakru, Arya, Vishnu Govind etc., are also a part of the cast list.
Script & Direction - Ranjith Sankar
Making a sequel that maintains the same identity and credibility of its prequel, is always a herculean task. Here, Ranjith Sankar has come out successful in making a film that has almost the same identity as that of its prequel.
In fact, he places Joy Thakkolkkaran in a milieu which is quite relatable for the Malayalam film audiences. The way in which he has addressed some of the biggest social issues through his script is commendable. Later on, the movie even takes the angle of a social satire. At the same time, some of the proceedings are bit hard to believe.
As a film-maker, Ranjith Sankar has neatly packaged the film by properly dividing humour and drama elements in the right proportions. There were some portions in the second half, which could have gone out of hand but with his expertise, he pulls the film back on track.
Music - Anand Madhusoodanan
Anand Madhusoodanam has done a fine job with the music department. The songs are worthy enough and the BGM of the film suits the genre and the situations, pretty well.
Other Technicalities
Vishnu Narayan has handled the cinematography department of the movie and he has done complete justice to the film and its genre. V Saajan has done a credible job in the editing department, especially in the second half of the film.
Overall View
Punyalan Private Limited follows almost the same pattern of its prequel by focusing on the issues faced by Joy Thakkolkkaran to start a new business. What makes the sequel different is the social angle and here, Ranjith Sankar has addressed almost all the major issues that the common man is facing in today's society.
The first half of the film is filled with loads of humorous elements that ride on the shoulders of Joy and his buddies. Many of them are enjoyable but some of them do fall in places. The second half delves to the social angle and the movie dares to question the existing practices in the system.
At the same time, there are some portions in Joy Thakkolkaran's battle against the system, which are slightly exaggerated and hard to be believed. Nevertheless, the intent of the makers is good and as the adage goes, all's well that ends well.
Verdict
Joy Thakkolkaaran and his team makes a decent return with Punyalan Private Limited and thus becoming one among the very few sequels that have done justice to their prequels.
