The long-delayed biopic on legendary Bollywood star Madhubala is finally back on track, with a major casting update grabbing headlines. As first reported by Variety India, actor Sara Arjun has been finalised for the lead role, bringing renewed attention to one of the industry’s most anticipated projects.
A key turning point for the film came when filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali joined the project as producer. Known for backing visually rich, period-driven cinema, Bhansali’s involvement has significantly boosted the film’s scale and credibility after years of budget-related delays.
The film will be directed by Jasmeet K Reen, who earned critical acclaim for Darlings. Her appointment signals a shift toward a more nuanced, character-driven narrative, focusing not just on Madhubala’s stardom but also her personal journey and emotional complexities.
For Sara Arjun, this project marks a major leap in her career. After gaining recognition in Dhurandhar (2025) and its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge–a franchise reportedly crossing ₹3000 crore globally–this role positions her at the center of a high-profile Bollywood biopic.

While Sara Arjun’s casting is confirmed, the makers are still finalising actors for the pivotal roles of Dilip Kumar and Kishore Kumar. Interestingly, Kiara Advani was earlier in discussions for the lead role, but the plans did not materialise.
According to Variety India, the film is being designed as a direct-to-digital release, allowing it to reach a global audience. The OTT format is expected to give the creators more flexibility in storytelling while tapping into the growing demand for biographical dramas online.
With production set to begin in July 2026, more casting announcements and official confirmations are expected soon.
