Koozhangal Story

Koozhangal (Pebbles) is a Tamil coming-of-age drama film directed by P. S. Vinothraj in his directorial debut. Chellapandi and Karuththadaiyaan starred in the main pivotal roles as Velu and Ganapathy, along with Philip Arulodss, Banu Priya, Raniyamma, and many other supporting actors.

The director's vision sparked a brilliant idea, and Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara stepped up to support the aspiring filmmakers. Their production company, Rowdy Pictures, brought the film to life. Vignesh Kumulai and Jeya Parthipan captured the movie's beauty through their lenses, while Ganesh Siva crafted the narrative with his editing skills.

Yuvan Shankar Raja, the musical prodigy, weaved his magic with the soundtracks and background score for this film. Though the initial release failed to ignite the audience's imagination, the film's premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2021, where it won the prestigious Tiger Award, was a resounding success. It was also selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. Yuvan's music beautifully complemented the film's narrative, elevating its emotional impact.

Story

In the scorching desert of Tamil Nadu, a man and his son embark on an extraordinary journey. Ganpathy, a drunk and enraged husband, sets out to retrieve his wife, who has fled domestic violence. Accompanying him is their little boy, Velu, who is too innocent to comprehend the magnitude of their quest. The journey is arduous and perilous, but Ganpathy is determined to win back his wife's love. As they traverse the unforgiving landscape, he begins to confront his own demons and the toxic masculinity that has fueled his abusive behaviour.

Along the way, Ganpathy and Velu encounter a cast of colourful characters, each of whom plays a role in their transformation. From a wise old woman who offers them shelter to a group of nomadic tribals who teach them the importance of community, these encounters help Ganpathy see the world in a new light. As they approach their destination, Ganpathy is consumed by anxiety. He knows that he must face his wife and her family, and he fears that they will reject him. But when they finally arrive, he is met with forgiveness and compassion.

Release Date

Koozhangal was released in theatres on February 4, 2021. And then, for the streaming service, it was released on Sony Liv on October 27, 2023.
