Nilavey Mugam Kaattu Story

Nilave Mugam Kaattu film directed by Mu.kalangiyam. Rakash(Ramki) and Murthy(Karthik) have been thick friends ever since Prakash took Murthy into his house - against the wishes of his own parents - after his father killed Murthy's mother in an accident. So Murthy thinks the world of Prakash. When Prakash goes to America to study, Murthy steps out of the house after overhearing Murthy's parents scheming to send him out disgracefully.

Murthy is given accomodation by an old man who is reminded of his son Govind and henceforth starts going by that name. Under the new name he runs into Kasturi (Devayani) a blind flower-girl. Romance blooms between them but after admitting her into a hospital for an eye operation, he is falsely arrested by the police and sent to jail.

Prakash meanwhile returns and promptly falls in love with Kasturi, who by now, has regained her eyesight and is looking for her love, Govind. Goaded by her well-wishers, Kasturi agrees to wed Prakash. Prakash introduces Murthy to her too but having known him only as Govind, she fails to recognise him.

Murthy decides to sacrifice his love for both his friend and his lover and things end in the grand tradition of all tamil movies.

Director Kalangiyam(who made the much better Poomani and Poondhottam) disappoints with this well-worn tale of friends sacrificing love for friendship. He gains some points with a gentle romance between Karthik and Devayani but totally slips up in the Ramki-Devayani affair with the viewer having absolutely no idea why Ramki fell for Devayani.

Karthik plays the usual playful-then-sacrificing role and is impressive. Devayani plays the blind girl without too much overacting while a beefed-up Ramki does what he can with the poorly-defined character. The Manivannan-Vadivelu comedy(?) track gets on our nerves. Almost makes you wish the censors laid down standards for the comedy track too so that they could snip out such tracks which are unfunny and have no connection to the story. Ilaiyaraja tunes some pleasant numbers. Special mention must be made of his background score. His music during the scene where Karthik makes sure the blind Devayani eats her share of the food makes the scene linger on in our hearts long afterwards.
