Interestingly, Vairamuthu has now emerged as the third writer in the history of Tamil literature to receive India's highest honour for literature. He has also emerged as the first Tamil writer in the last 20 years to receive the Jnanpith Award.Only two writers from the Tamil literature have received this award so far. Before Vairamuthu, writer Akilan received the Jnanpith Award in 1975, and later, famous writer-journalist Jayakanthan received the award in 2002.

As per the reports, the Jnanpith awardees will receive a prize money of ₹11 lakh. In addition, they will also be presented with a bronze statue of Goddess Saraswati, and a certificate of appreciation that recognizes their contribution towards the Indian literature. In the previous year (2024), the 59th Jnanpith Award was received by the famous poet Vinod Kumar Shukla.

MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu took to his official social media handles and congratulated Vairamuthu for the big achievement, with a special post. ""Jnanpith Award to the poet Vairamuthu, who rules Tamil with his poetry! I was talking to the poet this morning. This sweet news arrived shortly after, adding to the sweetness of that meeting!" reads the Chief Minister's post.

"This award, which has only been received by Akilan and Jayakanthan in Tamil so far, has brought him and us into a sea of ​​joy, joining hands with our ruling dynasty of poets who play with traditional and modern poetry and create innovations in the world of Tamil literature. If the leader had been an artist, he would have praised Kavi Perarasu with a smile. I stand beside him and congratulate Kavi Perarasu Vairamuthu! Tamil Nadu congratulates Kavi Perarasu," further added MK Stalin.
