Swathi Muthyam movie is about an autistic person who happens to defy existing social customs and traditions for a good cause. The movie was chosen to be India's official entry to the Oscars for 1986.

Kamal Haasan plays the role of an autistic person and all he is good at is obeying what his trusted grandmother says. In an attempt to do good to the life of a widow (with a 5-year old son).

Kamal Haasan marries her during an auspicious village festival much to the shock of villagers who in turn try to harm Kamal as this act of his stands against the traditional societal norms.
