From Book to Bust: 7 Malayalam Films That Didn't Adapt Successfully

Director Aashiq Abu’s Neelavelicham is an adaptation of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer’s novel of the same name. This story also served as the foundation for Malayalam cinema’s first horror movie, 'Bhargavi Nilayam,' which premiered in 1964. Directed by A. Vincent, the original film featured Prem Nazir, Madhu, and Vijaya Nirmala in the lead roles. Aashiq Abu’s rendition stars Tovino Thomas, Roshan Mathew, and Shine Tom Chacko, with Rima Kallingal taking on the role of the female protagonist.

Leela,  directed by Ranjith, stars Biju Menon and Parvathy Nambiar. Adapted from Unni R.'s short story 'Leela: The Divine Game,' the film follows Kuttiyappan, a middle-aged unmarried man in a Kerala village, whose life is transformed by Leela, a migrant worker from Tamil Nadu. Despite cultural and linguistic differences, they form a deep connection, challenging societal norms and exploring themes of love and desire. Praised for its rustic charm and nuanced performances, 'Leela' offers a poignant exploration of unconventional relationships and the human experience.

Inspired by GR Indugopan's understated yet emotionally resonant writing style, Biju Menon's, 'Oru Thekkan Thallu Case', brings to life the essence of Indugopan's notable work, 'Amminipilla Veetu Case'. Roshan Mathew and Nimisha Sajayan join Menon in key roles in this cinematic adaptation.

B. Ajithkumar gives a contemporary twist to Shakespeare's timeless romantic tragedy, 'Romeo and Juliet,' set in the northern Malabar region. The film sheds light on social injustices masked by politics. With a stellar cast including Surabhi Lakshmi, Sujith Shanker, Shane Nigam, Alancier, and Nimisha Sajayan, the chemistry between the protagonists captivates viewers, immersing them in their tumultuous journey of love amidst life's challenges.

Karmayogi directed by V.K. Prakash, is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. The film follows Raghuraman (Indrajith Sukumaran), who returns to his hometown to inherit his father's business after his sudden death. Suspecting foul play involving his uncle (Sai Kumar), Raghuraman uncovers layers of deceit and betrayal, echoing the themes of vengeance and moral ambiguity from the original play.

This movie is a cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth'. The film reimagines the classic tragedy set in the backdrop of the ancient martial arts of Kerala, Kalaripayattu. Directed by Jayaraj, 'Veeram' explores themes of ambition, power, and betrayal in a feudal Kerala setting. It follows the journey of Chandu Chekavar, played by Kunal Kapoor, who rises to power through treachery and violence, mirroring the arc of Macbeth. The movie captures the essence of Shakespeare's tale while infusing it with the rich cultural heritage of Kerala, offering a unique and visually stunning interpretation of the timeless story.

Njaan, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, is an adaptation of T.P. Rajeevan's 'K T N Kottur -Ezhuthum Jeevithavum'. However, the film faced challenges due to its excessively complex intellectual approach. Instead of captivating the audience, the intricate narrative left them perplexed and disconnected. Despite the commendable efforts to bring Rajeevan's work to life, the film's inability to strike a balance between intellectual depth and audience engagement hindered its success.
