Kollywood’s Flop-Free Filmmakers: Tamil Directors With Zero Flop Rate

H. Vinoth made his directorial debut in 2014 with Sathuranga Vettai, which turned out to be a sleeper hit. He followed this success with Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru starring Karthi, which received critical acclaim and commercial success. Later, he teamed up with Ajith Kumar and directed Nerkonda Paarvai, Valimai, and Thunivu all of which were commercially successful. Though some of these films received mixed reviews, the star power and execution helped them become hits. Currently, H. Vinoth is directing Jananaayagan starring actor Vijay.

Vetrimaaran entered Tamil cinema as a director with Polladhavan in 2007, which was a major success. He continued his successful streak with films like Aadukalam, Asuran, and Vada Chennai, especially in collaboration with actor Dhanush. His film Visaranai starring Attakathi Dinesh was even India’s official entry to the Oscars. His recent films Viduthalai Part 1 and Part 2 have elevated his stature even further, making him one of Tamil cinema’s most respected and successful filmmakers.

Mari Selvaraj began his career as an assistant to director Ram. He made his debut as a director with Pariyerum Perumal, which received widespread acclaim. He then directed Karnan, Maamannan, and Vaazhai, all of which earned both critical and commercial success. Mari Selvaraj has carved a niche for himself in Tamil cinema with his socially conscious storytelling. He is currently working on a new film titled Bison starring Dhruv Vikram, son of actor Vikram.

Lokesh Kanagaraj gained initial fame as a contestant in the short film show Naalaya Iyakkunar. He made his directorial debut with Maanagaram in 2017, which was well-received for its fresh screenplay. He followed it up with Kaithi, Master, Vikram, and Leo, all of which were huge hits. Lokesh introduced the concept of the LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe), which raised audience expectations for each of his films. Today, he is among the most sought-after directors in Tamil cinema.

Atlee debuted as a director in 2013 with the romantic drama Raja Rani, which was a major hit. He then collaborated with actor Vijay on Theri, Mersal, and Bigil, all of which were massive commercial blockbusters. He later ventured into Bollywood and directed Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films. Atlee has never delivered a flop in his career so far.
