Sweetheart OTT Release: When and Where to Watch Rio Raj’s Romantic Drama

The youth-centric romantic drama Sweetheart, starring Rio Raj and Gopika Ramesh, is all set for its digital premiere. The film will be available for streaming from April 11, 2025, on JioHotstar and Simply South. Audiences who missed the theatrical release can now catch this emotional relationship drama from the comfort of their homes. With music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and a fresh narrative on modern love, Sweetheart promises to engage OTT viewers as well.

Sweetheart film revolves around modern-day relationship complexities. Vasu (Rio Raj) has lost faith in relationships due to his parents’ separation. On the contrary, Manu (Gopika Ramesh) believes deeply in love and family. As they grow closer, she falls for him and initiates a romantic relationship. Despite Vasu’s hesitancy, they get physically intimate with precautions — but things take a twist when Manu gets pregnant. What follows is Vasu’s suggestion to terminate the pregnancy, and the film explores whether they go through with it or decide to raise the child together.

Rio Raj shows improved acting skills with this film, and his growth is evident. Gopika Ramesh, who previously worked in Malayalam films, impresses from the first scene and holds the audience's attention with a mature and nuanced performance. Supporting actor Arunachalam also delivers a notable performance that strengthens the narrative.

“Sweetheart” is directed by debutant Sweenith S. Sukumar. Cinematographer Balaji Subramaniam enhances the visual appeal with rich and vibrant frames. The music and background score by producer and composer Yuvan Shankar Raja bring a signature charm to the film. His songs and scoring elevate emotional moments and add a magical touch. Technical finesse in cinematography stands out, while editing could have been tighter, especially in the second half. The emotional climax, though passable, lacks major impact.

"Sweetheart" tries to blend youthful romance with emotional depth. The first half is light and engaging, while the second half attempts to dive into serious themes. Although the second half feels a bit stretched and melodramatic, Rio and Gopika’s performances keep it afloat. It's not at the level of Rio’s earlier hit “Joe”, but it doesn’t disappoint entirely either. A decent one-time watch for youth-centric drama fans.
